Welcome aboard. You'll enjoy this forum. Most of the threads are more balanced than this one ...

LOL, I work @ WM.

My BOSS is a woman that used to own a bright-work business. Once she asked someone if she could help, and he walked around her exactly like the scene in office space and asked me about varnish. (Something I've done exactly ONCE with decidedly mediocre results)

At least once a week someone asks them for a 'parts guy'

They handle it pretty well, but I have to say as the guy it PISSES ME OFF!!!

Re: Men Taking Over for Women

There I was holding my newborn daughter, or at least trying to. Every time I got a chance to hold her in my arms some woman come over and took her from me....

I guess they just thought that I would not be interested in taking care of my baby. Or perhaps they thought that I was not qualified.

Perhaps they thought that I would drop her. Or crush her. Or do some other stupid thing.

It was really quite annoying.

My daughter is 22 now and came out OK despite my presumed incompetence.

I'm older now and not willing to take that kind of stuff quite so much. You should hear me chase my mother in law out of the kitchen when I am cooking. (get the hell out of my kitchen!) She is from the old country and sees a man cooking well as infringing on a women's domain. At least we have made progress on that front. She had me show her how to cook French crepes. She likes them better then the blinchiki that she makes.

Not sure what this has to do with a drunk making an ass of themselves to everyone.

Re: Men Taking Over for Women

To discuss this subject (why men might not trust women's judgment concerning boats) in the context of an intoxicated male inserts an irrelavant bias.

I suspect most women who participate in boating is a result of their men's interest. Largely, they are there to support their men but often don't have the interest to learn what it is all about.

Personally, I find competent, knowledgeable, intelligent women to be attractive. I cook and do dishes as well as take an active interest to be an intelligent boater. My GF is more "intelligent" than I (she has a PhD and a much better memory), yet I answered every question on the USPS introductory course correctly and she didn't achieve a passing score at the end of the USPS class.

She is very supportive (such as customizing T-shirts with a photo of our boat), but doesn't take initiative to learn how to understand my boat, piloting, etcetera so as to be comfortable to take over in case I become incapacitated. Still, I make comments about boat handling, piloting, rules-of-the-road, etcetera hoping it will eventually "sink in."

A couple of months ago I observed a female expertly dock the couple's dual-engined motorboat, with the man just handling the lines. Wish I could observe more such.

Very well put...but I disagree. Without exception, when women come on my boat, they treat me with the awe and respect I deserve on account of me knowing stuff they don't. When men come aboard, they will do as they're told, but will try to tell me how I should be doing it, even if they have no experience in the particular field of sailing!!!

When we visit other people's boats (usually as a couple), sometimes the old guys will dis me initially, until they get to know me and realise that my knowledge and skills are awesome and start treating me with the awe and respect I deserve.... and then will actually start asking me stuff. So I have learnt to be patient.

One thing I have noticed, tho, is it takes Western men much longer to reach this conclusion than Arab men. For all that we have strange misperceptions about how Moslems treat their women, they do actually hold their women in high esteem on the whole, and if the woman is bright they will usually accept their decisions easily. The 'man is boss' thing is really just a front...

Interesting perspective Saucy in regards to different cultural norms! Thanks for sharing.

Love your description of the 'awe' and 'respect' you deserve ;0)

Re: Men Taking Over from Women

I've noticed that something about boats makes some guys, and women, very assertive. I've also noticed the the more unsolicited advice those individuals give, the less they generally know.

Fear and insecurity bring out attributes in people. Sailing is great way to find out what's really going on. Loud yelling angry. Means scared unsure incompetent. Pushy belligerent cocky means small Digits needs confirmation about how good they are lots of confirmation. A billion different antennas sticking straight up off the mast fly bridge arch and rails means they are using Viagra. pretty simple really

Op got in the way of an important mission.

Man person came out and saved the day damsel was standing on a pier doing women things. Not sure why she was there. But damsels do this kinda thing specially in old bogart movies. So she's standing there all misty and Rainey. Along comes a sailor bloke who had been in the town pub waiting for a moment where he was really needed. When the moment came he found a damsel and a boat in distress.

Couldn't get better for our hero. While trying to prove how important he was damsel went off script and tried do something other then show some leg. Rebuffed by the hero feeling dismissed the damsel posts to a popular column on the injustice of it all. I'll wrap this up after some commercials by ultra slim fast mascara and a new shoe which you could not walk in but all girls look great wearing the stump jump pump.

So now a movement in the town has started and women are running around tieing up boats except those wearing the stump jump pump. They can't run they just stand on the pier wearing nice pumps in the mist and rain.

Meanwhile the hero who actually did wrap a line around something has been emasculated for being too much the man is taught by a charming yet heavy set maid how to pass a line to a women so that she may secure it about the cleat in fine fashion. I think that's the story.
