Seriously: The most important parts of a marriage, being able to work together and resolve conflicts, or differences in opinion to be able to make a joint decision in areas that affect both of your lives. Is really the most critical relationship skill. But unfortunately one that is never even touched on in the typical dating relationship. Generally the woman is quiet and deferes to the man on the dating choices, takes over in the wedding planning, while the man deferes to her choices, and then both fight over the honeymoon decisions which is when any weaknesses in conflict resolution become apparent a little too late.

A change in dating procedure would probably result in lowering the over 50% divorce rate..

I am lucky enough to have a wonderful partner who loves sailing as much as I do, if not more. We work splendidly as a team on board. But we are different ("vive la difference" I say). She has strengths and weaknesses, as do I (oh, boy do I have weaknesses!). For example, she is a better helmsman than I, but I am stronger than her. So she generally steers and I generally trim... it plays to our strengths. Life with a partner is a compromise. You have to work at it. It is unrealistic to expect your partner to be exactly the same as you, but you have to cherish the differences as well as the similarities.

Caught up to this thread a little late but great comment, Anjou... I was lucky enough to meet and marry someone 25 years my junior who shares my love for the ocean, cruising and all things nautical.
When I found her early one morning sanding headliner battens on the dock, I knew I had a keeper. Cruised and lived aboard for a dozen years when she decided to go to med school so we are now shoreside until she completes her studies.
Each one in a union has wants and the partner should be willing to at least go half way to accommodate the other. If you really care for each other, it is easy and no one becomes the others door mat.
Life is a journey not a destination (someone here said that) so best mate with someone who you want to travel with... Capt Phil
