My husband and I have been living aboard
with our 60 lbs lab mix for going on 4 years. We adopted him when he was 9 months old. At the time we weren't liveaboards. He's is a fantastic boat dog! He snoozes in the cockpit
while we are under sail, was great going up and down the ladder on our previous boat, an Ericson
35, and couldn't be a better companion. He is more than happy to sleep all day, or join us when we are hiking or biking.
We put a lot of time in up front training him and as result have a pup we can take with us anywhere.
I did learn to keep some dog shampoo in the dinghy
. Every once in a while he can't resist taking a roll in something he thinks smells awesome. Toss a stick in the water
, shampoo, repeat tossing stick until rinsed!
You also have to live with the dog hair unless you go with a breed that doesn't shed.
We are kicking off for some extended cruising
this spring and he will be with us even though it may take some extra work to enter other countries with him!
