Lifeline Netting

I'm wondering if anyone has advice about lifeline netting purchase and instillation? I've looked at the sailrite videos and it looks tedious yet simple. Any words or wisdom?

Re: Lifeline Netting

Howdy!

The subject of Lifelines (and Netting) was discussed on the forum in another thread called "Deathlines."

In that thread I made some comments (on about page 4) about netting, and so did others, as I recall. Rather than repeat that, I will post the link to it here.

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...-134111-4.html

As I recall, others mentioned the use and sourcing of sport netting from sporting goods store.

Another source of netting would be a chandlery that sells net for commercial fishing purposes. This is the kind I have in mind for my future boat. I prefer the darker netting and want something robust, especially around the foredeck.

In that thread I also posted a link to photo posted on the forum of a boat owned by one of the members here that clearly shows very good use of the netting. His installation looks perfect.

I hope this helps you.

Re: Lifeline Netting

After sailing many years, we now have a two year old and installed lifeline netting this past summer. It's awesome! Definitely increases the usable deck space because I can put something right at the edge of the boat with no fear of it going over.

West marine has 50 foot lengths of pre-cut para cord for $6 that work nicely to string up the netting.

String the top first, then tighten down the bottom.

Re: Lifeline Netting

We got ours from a fishing supply store. Get a dark color, it is less visible. String it like a diamond, not like a square, that way you can achieve the perfect tension.

Definitely worth doing!

Yes,

Use a rectangle of Weather Max or Sunbrella, or whatever you prefer. Fix it permanently to the end that stays attatched when you open the gate.

When you sew it, reinforce the aft and forward edges with polyester or nylon webbing, and hem the other edges.. Put grommets in the 4 corners. Lash it to the stays-closed side. Insert strong bungie on the other corners, with strong clip hooks, so you can un-do them when you want the gate open, and fasten up for security at other times.

This is easier to make with a sewing machine, but can be sewn by hand, using a basting stitch, first one way, then doubling back. Can be strong as heck.
