Kitty Litter

How do you manage the cat's litter bin on a liveaboard and actively cruising sailboat?

Re: Kitty Litter

We leave the litter box on the shower grate of the forward head. When there are just the two of us sailing, we always use the aft cabin head. When we have company, the litter box goes on the floor of the aft cabin, in front of the bed. One can get around it in the night, albeit carefully. Regardless of location, daily cleaning essential.

Re: Kitty Litter

Train the cat to use the head like the rest of the crew. Find it on YouTube. You might start by placing a toilet seat, or something similar, around the existing litter box. Later, make a small litter box that fits on the head. Eventually, eliminate the litter.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube. One good one is "Cat toilet training step by step."

Re: Kitty Litter

We don't liveaboard, but go for several weeks at a time in the summer.
As our boat has minimal interior room, we have to make the best of it.
The litter box is below the cabin sole in the saloon and we use "The World's Best Cat Litter".
It's ground corn, minimal tracking, and NO smell.
People visiting sometimes ask, "Where do you keep the litter box?"
When I show them it's 3 feet from where they are sitting, they are always amazed.

It's great stuff.

Hi Bill,

We switched to the Breeze litter box system and haven't looked back. No dust, no mess.

We have more details on our blog post about Caring for Cats Onboard in case that is of interest.

Cheers!

Bill

Re: Kitty Litter

bubba has a larger than normal pan as he is a larger than normal maine coon mix cat. we use a wash basin for his litter pan and it fits wherever it wants to fit. underway it is in my bed cabin under my bed.
as bubba owns the boat he gets first pick of spaces to be. he is also always on leash.
his fb group gatos del mar has dealt with this many times.
bubba shuts down a bit when underway... doesnt use pan nearly as much, doesnt eat as much. doesnt much like noisey monster in bilges.....
would you care to join bubba and his friends in boats on ocean??
