I'm 17 And I Grew up on A Boat! Good Story

Came across this and thought I would share. 17 year old girl has spent the last 7 years growing up cruising.

The wife/mother of that family also authored at least one article for Cruising World mag.

Read about Faraday ROsenberg... I met her in English Harbor when she was living on a Valiant 40... she is the skipper of White Wings now:

Faraday Rosenberg is a Bright Spark on the Sailing Scene in 2010 - ALL AT SEA

Amazing to read this teen perspective as we are prepping our catamaran for our family's upcoming adventures. Thank you for sharing Maia!

Note the article says she's 15, not 17. You may have thought 17 because the website is seventeen.com.
Not that it matters that much, it's a great story either way - but I was wondering why she was saying her trip is ending now to go to school. Makes more sense at 15 than 17.

Re: I'm 17 And I Grew up on A Boat! Good Story

Our cruising has spanned far less distance yet more time. Both of my children spent their first 17 years aboard and many evenings in the dark away, from the city lights, watching the paths of satellites. The big difference is we had shore jobs for 190 days of each year and our children had lives at the marinas too.

It's interesting, though, how this life takes root in the expectations of freedom and the relationship we have with material goods and space. After college, marriage, and a child, my daughter tried the house living mode.

She and her family are aboard their own boat now and looking at twenty years aboard.

My kids often tell us that we "Ruined them"...
Not for taking them cruising and away from "normal life" but in returning.
They both tell us that they can never be "normal" and in a way that is both a blessing and a curse.

Thanks for sharing this story. It's a good one.

I almost want to tell her not to "normal" and find her own path, even if on her own boat. There's still a lot of places in the world to see by boat.
