Re: Four People and a Sailboat. The Quest.

I started this thread four months ago looking for some advice on which boat our family of four should choose for extensive 24/7, 360 cruising and liveaboard.
Back then, we wanted

Quote:
a boat with a three-cabin layout,cutter, 45 feet+, bluewater cruiser, maximum 180K, mono hull
After much valuable suggestions, some harsh critique, and lots of reading all done here in the forum, we have made the choice, found the vessel, signed the papers.

She is a 2001 Robertson and Cane Leopard 38 catamaran 135K, in Key West. She is perfect, nothing to do on the boat. Not true, of course, lots of little things to do on the boat, naturally. And we are expecting all kinds of nasty surprises in the near future, but we are at this point happy with our choice; and thank you all very much!

Here she is, getting ready for survey

yes boatman, I also put some garlic on a string around my neck and made a sign of a cross.

that is the dangest looking monohull I've ever seen. looks like it is missing the middle part and the keel - a real money pit project. no cutter rig and shorter than 45 ft.

you are allowed to change your mind, but a multihull.........

Re: Four People and a Sailboat. The Quest.

Congratulations on making the right choice the first time.

The 38's are said to be a bit bucky on the open ocean, but you could never find a more comfortable design for 4 people if you sailed all the seven seas.

If you DO sail the seven seas, and do find a better design, let me know.

Great to see that price too. I'm gaining hope that I'll be able to afford one myself in a couple of years when my "other" obligations have finally subsided.

Re: Four People and a Sailboat. The Quest.

boatman and carstenb, let's have a heated debate: mono vs. multi...or not...

we have a main sail and a jib and that is what excites us the most (now we need to figure out what to do with those...)

ArtM, good luck finding a cat soon, don't let your other obligations delay you too much...

Re: Four People and a Sailboat. The Quest.

Mira,

I PM'd you when you first posted back in January. Glad to see you guys weren't deterred by some snarky comments, and found a boat!

Congratulations!

Best of luck, and I'll watch the blog to see how you are all coming along!

Cheers,

Re: Four People and a Sailboat. The Quest.

Life nomadic

The good news about multihulls is they float just as well upside down

Just some good natured ribbing of course ( well maybe a bit of envy also). I sail a mono, but in reality have nothing against multis except they have room for a big freezer and I don't

Good luck with the boat and happy sailing

Re: Four People and a Sailboat. The Quest.

Hey guys! We are having a blast, sailing all the time and visiting incredible places! Cuba, Mexico, Guatemala, the Bahamas, Dominican Republic Puerto Rico, the BVI, all of the Caribbean islands! Heading to Barbados in a few days. Our son is now 17 and he did not enjoy the journey as much as we did, missing his friends, school and old way of life, so he went back home in Canada to live with good friends and relatives, finish high school and start job or college next. He will be visiting us form time to time, Maya, 11 is doing great! She even published an article in Caribbean Compass, titled "My school is not a building. The things I like and dislike about sailing." Check it out in this month's edition page 32 i think Caribbean Compass - Caribbean Yachting and Boating News Magazine There you can find my article about Saba too.

We LOVE Fata Morgana, our 38 foot 2001 Leopard catamaran!! We installed 1,500 wat solar panels, lithium batteries and new charge controllers and we are completely off grid. We fuel once a year, and we don't have a generator. We strictly sail, no engines.

Thanks again to all who helped us with our choice of boat! Next year- Columbia, Panama, French Polynesia, Australia!

Four People and a Sailboat. The Quest.

Give us a holler when you get to FP. We'll be there from April to November, mostly in the Tuamotus, in our little Crealock. We'll be happy to come over and stretch our legs on your big, back deck. We'll bring the poison cru.
