Fish!

Does anyone have pet fish? If so, please describe how you take care of them. Like where you keep them, and also what type of fish you have, Salt water or freshwater.

Ok, I'm not dumb or ignorant of fish care. I currently have a 25 gallon tank full of fish, so...... I'm talking about what you do, if you do anything special while at sea. Like, for example, rough weather care.

Re: FISH!

I Think CatMan puts a life jacket on his fish when it gets ruff out.

Re: FISH!

Guess you might need to put them in a fish-school for awhile to teach them how to clean up.

Re: FISH!

How do they get back in the boat if they fall overboard? Does Raymarine make a FOB system?

Re: FISH!

I find it less mess to keep my boat in the fish tank. I'm not always sure it's my fish swimming around though. The water's pretty cold too so every once and while I take one out and warm it up in a pan. I been getting the pan too hot though and they seem to die. I'll keep trying to get it right.

But seriously, fishing boats often have a live well for bait so I suppose in theory it might work but it seems, well, challenging.

Re: FISH!

I would not want one inside the vessel in a seaway.

It can be done

I've been on cruising boats where the kids have had a fish tank. Usually consists of a large pasta sauce bottle / jar suspended in a string net. The lid was on and had holes punched in it. The best one was initially 4 guppies in a single jar. On catching up with them a year later they had multiplied to 3 jars and about 15 fish. So they
must of been doing ok.

Just make sure they have PDFs, harnesses and tethers when offshore.

Also make sure you declare them in crew manifest so they can be properly quarantined on arrival.

Re: Fish!

Absolutely, our Betta Fish loves Nantucket. She wants to go there all the time.
We just put the bowl in the sink when we are offshore or in anything ruff.
