First Aid Kit for Offshore Dogs

OK, so the final prepartions are being made for our imminent departure, and that, of course means putting together the first aid kits for the dogs. Below is a list of what we might need extra for them...

I have not included all the stuff we have in our kit that can be used for them, such as gauze and bandages. I have included stuff we wouldn't want to share with the dogs, such as tweezers etc.

Could you take a look, and see if there's anything I have missed off?
  • Activated charcoal to absorb an ingested poison (contact vet or poison control center before treating an animal for suspected poisoning)
  • Hydrogen peroxide 3% to induce vomiting (after consulting with vet or poison control center)
  • Digital rectal thermometer
  • Eye dropper or large syringe without needle to give medicine or liquids or to flush wounds
  • Muzzle (injured dogs can become aggressive out of fear or pain, however, if your dog is vomiting, do not muzzle him)
  • Protective Collar
  • Extra leash or harness
  • Stretcher for large dogs (a blanket, throw rug, floor mat, board or other object can be used in a pinch)
  • Tweezers
  • Vaseline
  • Scissors
  • Nail clipper
  • Styptic powder/stick
  • Cotton balls
  • Eye wash
  • De worming tablets
  • Antibiotics
  • Sedative
  • Euthanasia

I should have credited: Pet Nutrition and Animal Wellness - Mercola.com, where I got much (but not all) of the info from.

For our cats we also carried fluid to release ticks and anti-flea from StrongHold or StrongArm or something.

Ticks are why I put the vaseline on the list. Smother the buggers, then when they suffocate, they can be drawn out with the tweezers

Anti-flea shampoo is going on the list - I'll search to see what this Stronghold stuff is.

  • Euthanasia
Curious, is this last item available (readily)?
Is it legal in your part of the world? I am assuming it may not be say in Oz - but don't really know for sure .

I can understand you not wanting to share it

No. Euthanasia is illegal in Kuwait unless a dog is in severe pain, and I believe it has to be smuggled in to deal with aggressive animals who are brought to the shelter. That said, when we needed an aggressive pet dog (he got grumpy in old age with loss of sight and smell) to be put to sleep a few years back, ONLY the govt vet would do it!

But as a last resort I would rather give an injection than use a sharp knife to the throat, which IS legal here.

The flea stuff is here: Stronghold | Stronghold Flea Treatment | Side Effects

We had the shotgun as last resort euthanasia but I was very relieved to find a good vet when the time for this was reached.

Yes that is the Stronghold treatment that we found far superior to other treatments. More expensive too but it eliminates the drama of shampooing three cats which is worth it

Re: First Aid Kit for Offshore Dogs

Two bungs to deal with gastroenteritis.
A 10 mm nylon line to deal with seasickness. Tow him behind the boat.
Two gallons of constipation-inducing medicine, meat-flavoured.
A large rasp to file the teeth in case he bites.
A big sack to put him in to prevent him shedding inside.
A Phantom comic for him to read while in the sack.
A spare wooden leg in case a shark nips one off.
A book on the correct ritual for changing a dog's name. You should now call him "Lucky".

Here's one - Nuseals, or other low dose aspirin for pain management...
Found a very comprehensive page here, actually: Dog Tip: First Aid Kits and Emergency Treatments - Prepare Now!

Its not too hard to get meds for pets. We keep several on hand. Rimadyl, tramadol, never recc aspirin to dogs. Or any NSAID, unless you are trying to kill them. You can give a low dose of immodium for diarrhea. Medicine for ear mites, eye infection. Always good to carry Thermazene ( silver sulfadiazine cream) it is incredible for wound care and burns and topical infections on dogs! Really promotes healing and generation of granular tissue in cases of severe wounds or burns. Good on people too for burns!
And just an fyi i know it sounds horrible but in cases of euthanasia on a boat. Drowning is a really quick way to do it and not extremely painful just causes a panic for a few seconds. Then peacefulness. Much better than days of agony.

Re: First Aid Kit for Offshore Dogs

I am guessing that "Euthanasia" is some sort of hot shot commercial product.

My concern would be in taking anything that potent accross borders - likely that will be illegal (or prescription only - possibly only to Vets?) in quite a few places......not simply for it's ability to kill dogs (or humans?!) easily - but likely anything with that degree of potency can also be used / abused for fun!

Re: First Aid Kit for Offshore Dogs

Good point, DOJ, and you're right, we would need to keep it with a prescription. But then, we have a load of meds onboard anyway for people that should be kept with a prescription...

Also, euthanasia is a verb. It's generally carried out by administering an overdose of anesthetic, usually pentobarbital (sp?), I believe.
