Nala is still doing well. We got a counter offer today on a 40' cutter that's almost acceptable. I hope to have a big boat soon.
Best,
Steve

It's been 6 months now and the dog is the same stinky, hairy, needy, whining, pooping, lovable, kind, necessary member of the family as ever. No fishhook was ever produced and no problems whatsoever. Here's the dog and her boy. Yes, the boy is a dwarf and he has a purple mohawk. When you're a dwarf you can sport a purple mohawk, no problem.

Any dog that thinks it's a fish isn't quite right! Kidding of course. They're both very cute. Apparently the acids in a stomach can dissolve a fairly signficant amount of metal. Fortunate for the pup I'd say!

It is quite amazing what can be passed through the entire GI tract without problem. I have even seen razor blades and sewing needles go through without problem. I hope Nala is feeling well. I suspect she will pass it just fine. It is usually a bigger problem when they swallow something like a rag that will ball up and cause an obstruction. As an aside...I do not think searching for it at the other end is worth the risk of injury. Since it is metal it can be followed on xray if you are curious.

Do you know if the fishhooks were embedded or loose and they just passed? We had one loose fishhook that passed with bulk feeding but have another small hook embedded in the stomach in the cardia region that they couldn't remove via endoscope as provided to difficult as possibly embedded too deep. I am concerned about the risks of a full surgery to remove it and recovery as well as costs and am trying to understand risk with leaving it. Since she is younger and very happy and healthy I definitely am a bit concerned about leaving it particularly with reading about potential risk of stomach lining infection or potential for further injury.

Re: Dog Ate a Fish Hook !

Corinb, your concern is laudable, but considering that the last post in the thread was from over seven years ago, I suspect that the dog survived on her own, or that she didn't and her owner (the op) was so stricken that he never told us.

Re: Dog Ate a Fish Hook !

corinb,
My answer to your question is that the hook in your dog probably did not puncture through into the peritoneal cavity. If it did then peritonitis would have developed and he/she would be pretty sick - septic even. My suggestion is to allow the "digestive juices" to consume the hook. Given that you know the hook material and it is not stainless. Other obvious things to consider is your attachment to the dog and your pocketbook depth. Plus the dog breed. Labs are known to eat an awful lot of "things" and survive just fine. Some other breeds, not so much. Post films if you can.
Best of luck.

Corinb, welcome aboard CF, good to see the your first post is one of care and concern of our fur baby crewmates.

It easy to miss the posted date earlier threads and I'm sure most of us don't mind if you turn late for the party; tis far better to be late than miss it completely ....

As a WAG, corinb just had a dog swallow a fishhook, went looking for info and this thread came up as a search engine result?

(This thread came up for me as #6 out of 11,400 Google results on "dog swallowed fishhook")
