Re: cruising with a dog

You can train the dog to use a piece of AstroTurf that is equipped with a tether; clean this by dragging overboard for a minute. (Drag the AstroTurf, not the dog.) There are plenty of videos on YouTube on this, as well as videos about just about anything you can think of. Train dog or cat to use toilet, etc, etc.

Re: cruising with a dog

What size dog?

We picked up a plastic tub meant for storing stuff under you bed. The sides are about 6" tall, 2'x3' and put a piece of carpet in it. It sat in the cockpit.

It took a couple weeks to get the idea thru but then it was a great option. Of course as a Chihuahua 6" sides were plenty tall enough to keep it contained.

He still prefers land based but nice if he needs late night relief and you don't want to break out the dingy.

Re: cruising with a dog

Friend of mine spent an entire winter collecting frozen samples of his dog's urine so that he could pre-scent the out door carpet for the dog to go on. He went as far as securing a log to the Sampson post for added realism. The dog simply refused to go holding things in for up to 18 hours. Not until my buddy dropped his drawers and added his own scent to the carpet did the dog start start using it!

This is a great way to train a dog to pee in one spot - my friend's dad taught us that with his german shepherd & can confirm it worked like magic.

Re: cruising with a dog

We used am old mat that "Sasha" (ships dog) had peed on, tied it onto the stern step for a weekend, then removed. Since then 99% of toileting done on either stern step despite a complete rebuild of the sterns last winter.
We just hose it off.

Re: cruising with a dog

We had a very large swim platform with stairs not a ladder to it. Our two Golden Retrievers learned to go up and down the stairs and relieve themselves on the swim platform.
