Cruising Dog Groomer

Hi all, I'm just putting some feelers out to see if this could work. We are buying a boat to live and cruise on and hopefully make a little money along the way. I have been a dog groomer for over 10 years and wonder if this could work out in a cruising lifestyle. Is there a need for this service, lets say in mexico or the caribbean.

1. Very few cruising dogs.
2. Cruisers are ..... grinders, tightwads, DIY types.
3. A lot more human heads needing "grooming". Better chance of getting some biz there but again, they want it cheap, free, for trade, or their "other half" will do it for them.

I know of a guy who set of cruising with hopes of adding to his cruising kitty by sewing canvas. Lot's of boats need canvas work. Very few wanted to do more than trade margaritas for it.

The only person I ever knew who returned to the States from cruising was a guy down on the Rio Dulce back in '92 who did radio and engine repairs. He left home with a lot of spare parts, diodes, etc. He worked half days three days a week, did good work at reasonable prices.

In a Caribbean anchorage with 75 boats as I write, about 2 boats with dogs and those folks do not have money.

Learn to fix ouboards... and carry a large spare inventory of carburetor rebuild kits for Yamaha, Tohatsu and Mercury. There are 3 motors in the anchorage that I know need fixing and people will pay for that.

Who said it was easy out here...

Being a Renaissance man may have its advantages in the cruising world. You will come across people in anchorages that have needs. You may come across people that have both needs and money. but if there is very little equipment, you may want to have it just to increase your options. Even if people are willing to trade for payment, remember that a large portion of the world still uses bartering. But you are on the right path, using your experiences and skills to get where you want to be.
