Birds On Board

We are transitioning from life on the land to a live aboard. No worries about my cat she is cool with the idea and the birds love it (a macaw and a amazon) but looking for ideas and insights on where the birds can stay during bad weather etc and any other input. They currently live cage free on perches on the bow of our 27 foot S2

On your shoulder, perhaps, shouting out drinks orders and soliciting crackers?

Re: Birds on board?

OMG ... a macaw and an amazon, do I feel sorry for you. Just kidding, but you do have your hands full. We have lived aboard a Baba 30, Niagara 31 and now a Wauquiez 35 with an amazon and a conure and its not easy sometimes. Ours live in a small cage down below but spend most of the time out of the cage where the play on top. It's not ideal but they seem fine with it since the flock, all four of us, are right together and of course they like that. Are you going to live aboard the S2 with them? Any cruising out of the country planned. That can be a problem.

Re: Birds on board?

African Grey owner here. Oldish guy, 29. A lot like me he is very fond of the Wife and damn jealous. We are taking him to the boat tonight for the first time.

A timely post.

Re: Birds on board?

We will be living aboard the S2 with them yes but no traveling out of the country or anything just intracostal and maybe a little bit of local sea cruising....
Cannot wait they really like it and both birds are quiet and non destructive which is why out of the original seven these two got to go with

Re: Birds on board?

Tori, do you plan any sort of cage below for them? We had to set the cage either on the saloon table or the settee. A macaw is a damn big bird and I'm having a hard time visualizing it and an amazon (which one by the way, ours is the smallest ... Spectacled or white-front) in the cabin of a 27' sailboat. Don't you need a big cage for the macaw?

Both of the birds already live 100 % cage free they have portable wooden perches with catch trays and food and water bowls attached that fit neatly on the benches in the stern or on the floor. Duckts is about 12 x 18 inches and 24 inches tall and she is a blue front amazon. Claras is 18 x 20 inches and about 30 inches tall, they gave per carry crates for inside during bad weather or rough seas but otherwise they are on the stern under cover. Clara is a Scarlett macaw and yes if caged they need big cages. She will walk around the boat and sit on the rails Ducky is not that adventurous.

Umm, err... hope you don't have much wood above or below.
Met a woman in Mexico who had two macaws on board a boat which started with lots of wood; when I met her one could just maybe persuade one's self there was still some there...

Re: Birds On Board

Here is how we kept our below. This was in the Niagara 31. We were able to drop the saloon table down to level with the seats.

Tabasco(severe macaw) is 16... We lived aboard for 7 of those years, and now he cruises with us every time, as long as we don't plan to leave US waters. Never been in a cage in his life!
