We had the meeting at the school last week with the teacher. She went on and on about how terrific it was about what we are doing with Foster next year. Not to worry about the curriculum. He will have such a life experience and come back ahead of his peers in so many ways. And the Spanish he will learn in Mexico will make up for the year of French he will miss etc. She was gushing. Exactly what we didn't want to hear from the teacher. We wanted the teacher to stress the importance of studying dilliegently lest he get left behind. That way we don't have to be the bad guys trying to get him to do school work for a few hours a day.

We've already briefed the middle school teachers on what they are supposed to say in their meeting...

But truth is we already know that missing school won't be a problem. The oldest son missed about 2/3 of his schooling. He was still near the top of his class. But of course, he's dead now.

If you have the means to cruise with your kids, for God's sake do it. It doesn't matter a damn bit what somebody else thinks. Be with them. Show them the world. There is no greater gift.

[quote=Woodsong;250526]Humph! Well, was talking with a friend about the desire to hit the road...cruise east coast/down to the islands then who knows...maybe keep going. We've got 2 children- currently 5 and 6. I was told by my friend that such a trip is a "dream not fit for kids" and should not be done, irresponsible, etc. etc.

Ahoy Woodsong,

I too hail from Ga. (Marietta), was wondering where you are located... was going to leave a PM but I think I messed it up... anyway, I too am researching this option for our two kids... I do recommend "Black Wave" as a story that takes a bit of the shine off the apple but is probably pretty accurate... My big question is if this can be done with early teen girls.. I just wonder if she will be miserable not being able to talk on the phone with friends or meet a the mall etc.. We don't have TV so we at least have that going for us... I know it would be better for them in the long run but perhaps the medicine kills the patient?? My 2Ks are now 7 (b) & 9 (g) and would be 9 & 11 when/if we leave... From my research it seems taboo to take a 13 yr old... but I am sure it has been done...

Best of luck with the effort...

cheers

Just a couple of blogs of cruising families that are boat schooling their kids:
ToastFloats (read all of the posts for the big picture)
and s/v Totem.
A lot of questions can be answered in these blogs.
