Where do you get yeast on Mexico?

Specifically Mazatlan. I have been to the Wal-Mart, Soriana, and the Mega. I have yet to see yeast. At the Mega a native english speaking employee even told she had never seen it there and didn't know where to send me to find it.

Also in espanol is yeast called "levadura" ?

Anyway, thanks in advance for whatever advice you can offer. I would love to make a little bread sometime in the near future.

In/on you know what I mean.

Looks like you can make your own sourdough. Here are some recipes:

Dear Yeti,

Yes Yeast is levendura in Spanish and should be available in Mexico. Self raising flour is called 'harina de trigo" Any Panderia (bread shop) should have some. In latin America, two popular companies for yeast are Fleischmann and Robin Hood. I believe the former is international.

regards

Alan

Levadura is Spanish for yeast (or leavening).
* levadura de cerveza = brewer's yeast
* levadura de panadero = baker's yeast
* levadura en polvo = baking powder

I don’t know what levendura is.

I make beer and mead. Mostly we buy yeast from known suppliers.

However, in a pinch, you can make a dough, and leave it set for a few hours out in the air - give it a good mix and wait again. Eventually it will rise. Yeasts' cells are wind borne and can be found EVERYWHERE....

the BAD thing to doing this is bacteria can take hold too, but USUALLY yeast will produce enough alcohol content quickly enough to prevent bacterial infection.

Anyway - I said in a pinch, I wouldn't make a practice of this. haha.

Also, my wife would recommend making a batch of bread and keeping some of it as a starter batch. It will contain enough yeast cells to reproduce in bread dough in a couple of hours or so to give you bread that rises.

(Of course, I'm neither a chemist, nor a DNA analyst nor do I play them on TV, but my Stout is AWESOME!)

You can make your own sourdough starter by keeping the water you boil your spuds in?

And dont forget beer bread.

I wonder if ginger beer would work?

Thanks to all for the assistance. A shop in the central market had some and now I have some. Special thanks to Mr Gord for providing a more precise translation of what I was looking for.

Also, I definitely plan to try the beer bread out as well. However this leads to the question of Pacifico or Modelo or Corona or .......?
