Ahh... the great beetroot debate. I used to be IslandH's camp, couldn't stand the stuff on a burger but somehow tastes have changed and now I side with GW; it is a "must have"!
The pineapple of the other hand, well take it or leave it!

Yep, Trational 'Aussie Burger" should have Beetroot. Not so common now I have noticed. But if I make a burger at home we put sliced beetroot in.
I think even Macca's may have had an Aussie burger with Beetroot but I only recall this from TV commercials and have (Never will) buy one from there.

Am surprised that the traditional Aussie Burger does not include a Meat Pie in the middle ........with the secret ingrediant being vague on the origin of the meat (species and body parts).

I'd completely forgotten about that delicacy! My Bros-in-Law put both the sliced beetroot and the pineapple on the grill along with the mince and egg... then layered them together with tomato sauce and mayo... what a feast. He told me it was a 'Top End' meal... we are headed back to OZ in a couple of months and I must remind him to build me another... Capt Phil

Steady on old chap, don't start taking the P of our sacred foods...for starters, we never eat beetroot or pineapple with a pie so it's inconceivable to we would stick a pie in a burger.

Meat pies are :-

1) Served upside down in a bowl of thick pea soup.

2) Served with the top crust opened and a very thick pea "porridge" pumped under.

A fair splash of the sauce bottle is optional.

Just the thing after a hard night on the town.

Beetroot on a burger is fine, but they can keep the shredded carrot...

It's not "thick pea soup" or at least it should not be, it is Mushy peas, and the upside down pie in the middle in a plate of mushy peas is called a "pie floater". As for hamburgers etc., yes to beetroot, no to pineapple, fruit and meat is an abomination and shredded carrots are as appetising as a three day old doggy pooh. .

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and so it is with food. Not huge fans of beetroot, but admit it can be nice on a burger...and it certainly carries an Aussie pedigree. As for the rest, probably skip the pineapple (but wouldn't knock it back if offered!) but love shredded carrots. Ah well, each to our own eh?

...and we wonder how long can this thread (having NOTHING to do with sailing!) last, although perhaps the collective salivating is keeping it alive...or should we say afloat?!?

Pineapple on an Australian cheeseburger would be extremely rare. I have never seen it. DOJ is actually right, not bad for an almost Pom, an Australian burger with pineapple would be called "Hawaiian".

The only other way to get pineapple would be to order a " works " or " the lot " burger. An Australian burger with the works typically has meat, pan fried onion, beetroot, tomato, lettuce, bacon, egg and pineapple. Nooooo pickles.

The bun is always toasted which makes it heaps tastier and easier to eat. Those McD buns are sugary, soggy crap. Regrettably there are few Greeks left in the business meaning standards are slipping. My local Greek hamburger guy recently retired - just 'cause he was 76. Selfish bastard I say ! He made the best burgers, roast chicken, fish and chips in the area.
