Re: What Food to Buy Without Refrigeration?

If you can argue with this presentation, well, your just thick, as my Mother used to say.
Watch "Debunking the paleo diet: Christina Warinner at TEDxOU" Video at TEDxTalks

I'm interested in sailing. I long for the idea and the experience of some degree of self sufficiency. Autonomy, that's what the boat is all about for me. Freedom to enjoy the day, the water, the life around me. Having a simple and, I know it isen;t entertaining, but a plain diet sounds good to me. I think all of this talk of what did people eat back in the day, is a good thing. It's on the right track. We need to get back to the garden, if you will, back to what is human food. And it looks like it is diversity. And the keystone is whole. The whole food. Which is lucky for me. It's the perfect thing for traveling on a boat. Minimal refrigeration. Easily stored grain, nuts, seeds. Fresh fish, when the bastards will get in the boat. Sunshine = Vit. D. Go ashore and find a fresh market with local veggies. WTF, I can't imagine it getting any better. Trust your gut, go with, carefully, your deep cravings. Sail the boat! And by the way. Can I get some mayo for my fish sandwich dear?

I'm sorry, but he doesn't sound emotional. You do, however. Hey, passion is a good thing, but Coops didn't sound emtional to me.

It's a SAILING food thread, and to continually try to drive out a number of foods that many of us like doesn't seem right to me. You do what you want, but I think I'll make Persian rice for breakfast tomorrow.

People are omnivores. To take and eat from nature, but not in the way of pink slime or genetically modified junk.

Not using a freezer is pretty stupid imho but there are ways around it. Like canning, fishing, hunting, gardening.

Here is something good: growing fresh veggies without the need for dirt or green fingers; here's my guide, it's in Dutch but pictures and translators should be okay enough:

A freezer is ideal, even more so than a reefer maybe.

Growing fresh veggies is a great idea. I've grown wheat grass for juicing soil-less, but i always ended up with mould issues on coco mat.

Are there many restrictions sailing around the caribbean country to country with live plants?

I cannot argue with the video, or the other one either, because I have not seen it. nor will I. I am not interested in diets per se. But it is always possible that I still may be thick because of that. Being blissfully unaware and happily useless has got me this far, so I guess I will make it to the end.

Raku, for possibly the first time you and I can agree on something. Ice cream! Yes! I do not care how many chemicals are in it either.

Coops.

Coops, no need for added chemicals. Homemade is the way to go - it just contains cream, milk, egg yolks, sugar and a vanilla bean.

Yummmmmmmmmmm (second only to chocolate on my list of favourite food).

And when you combine the two, well, the world moves LOL .

Coops.
Both of my GF's paternal grandparents reached 100. Their diet? Traditional Bavarian. Grandma's Knödels were apparently to die for. And lots of beer.
Lots of fatty porc, and grain based stuff...

I'm reading Marlene Zuk's "Paleofantasies" right now, and it's a interesting read. The assumptions behind the "Paleo Diet" are simply wrong. That agruculture was a big mistake also. Agriculture does have it's downsides, but without agriculture their wouldn't be much culture either.

My doctor once told me that "if you want to live long, start by carefully choosing your parents".
When it comes to how long you live, what diseases you get and how you die this has all mostly already been determined the day you were born. Your genes determine to a large extent your propensity for getting cancer or HD.
And even when you do leave a perfectly healthy life and manage to theoretically tack a few years to your life, you can still end up under a bus.

So live and enjoy the now. A motto that should appeal to the crowd here I'd expect....

No strawberries?

Anyway, most of the store bought ice cream around here is good quality too. And a lot more flavours to be had than just plain vanilla.

I agree plain vanilla can get a little boring sometimes .

Fruit and Veg is technically still "alive" when you buy it. Preserving them always involves some preparation first. That's why you blanch fresh vegetables a bit before freezing them for example.
If you expose fruit of veg to a vacuum long enough you're drying them...

Re: What Food to Buy Without Refrigeration?

When I was on my year long cruise, I stocked up on every kind of canned vegetable in the world (I probably sank my waterline several inches).

You just heat them up, season them and eat them. I had never been much of a vegetable eater since leaving home and mom's home cooking, but after eating that way for several months, I never felt better in my entire life and I got back to my high school weight.

The only down side is that a lot of them do have a lot of sodium in them. So, if you are on a low sodium diet, this may not be the diet for you.

It ain't vanilla until you see the little dark spots of real vanilla, which is super with some fresh fruit. The rest is all chemical junk.

Do you think all the dark spots are vanilla?

I bet 1 in 10 is and the rest is a nice black additive... dirt off the floor!
