Weird canned food fail

So I had a can of pineapple slices in the bilge over the summer. I also had an oil leak and some water and, well, the can got oily water on it.

Big deal, wipe it off and chow down.

Apparently not.

The can appeared to be in good shape, very minimal rust. No leaks, it sat in a box in the living room for some months.

Tonight I opened it and....oil on the pineapple! Yet the stuff appeared to not be spoiled! Damned if I know. A "sister" can, bought at the same time with the same history was fine.

How the heck does oil get into a can, and the fruit not go bad???

I used to work at a pizza place. One night I heard an explosion from downstairs in the storeroom. There was broken glass everywhere. It turned out to be that several cans of pineapple had exploded. At least one of the cans shot in the air and broke the flourescent light bulbs on the ceiling. I discovered that the expiration date was long past due. Pineapples are acidic, and the acid can eat through the can from the inside. Maybe you had a pinhole in the can from the acid.

Re: Weird canned food fail

Assuming it's a traditional tin can they use some type of sealing compound around the lip when they seal the can. Possibly the oil was able to penetrate that.

I spent a few minutes trying to google the above and wasn't getting any good hits. Not sure how to phrase the question so it knows exactly what I'm searching for.

From now on I'm make sure my food cans stay away from any chemicals especially solvents like penetrating oil.

Re: Weird canned food fail

I had a can of sliced pineapples in the pantry at home. After only 18 mo. or so, the acid ate through the can and it leaked, making a pretty big mess.
