Weber is the real deal

I've had the Weber Q280 (the largest Q at the time, 2 burners, electronic ignition) since 2013.
Before the Weber, I had a Magna like grill, that had really thin sheet metal and I discovered I could not get enough heat into it.It acted more like a radiator.
Well, it didn't last long anyway. It was mounted on the port rail and after a docking incident in my first weeks, it was no more.

I went to Walmart and got the Weber (which I had at home and absolutely loved) and I've been happy for 4 years and running.

The only thing that corrodes is the electronic starter. I just buy generic ones and I am now on number two.

It's in the stern deck because I have the room and I want it sheltered from the wind. It's never gone out, but it may if both burners are on the lowest setting.
I use it in all types of weather since I do not cook meat inside the boat.

I have it plumbed to the boat's propane system, so it uses 20 lb source.

The picture of me and the Weber was taken in Ireland.
The steak was done on Christmas Day 1200 miles east of Martinique. I got the steak in Las Palmas and it was so goooood.

I used it mainly on the inside and on the grates at the beginning of this season, I didn't specifically do the exterior but I didn't keep it from getting on it either. I didn't have any of the color bubble up or any other issues but proceed with caution.
On a side note, as above after a few years our only problem has been the igniter, Weber cast a small hole just behind it where you can light the grill with a lighter from the outside.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

Found a great product for the Q. Grilling fish on its wide grate can be a challenge. We got the Phatmat silicone mats for our oven and they included a grilling mat. It is a little large for the Q so you need to trim the corners off to get it to fit. Veggies and fish are a breeze now! Nothing sticks and nothing falls through the grate. Highly recommend!

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

I love to BBQ. And after 25 years of owning different BBQ grilles on boats I read this thread and purchased a Weber Q1000 about 3 months ago. This is ABSOLUTELY the best BBQ we have ever owned on a boat or at our home. No more flare ups or the flame blowing out. When we get back to our house the first thing I’m doing is buying a larger version. Kudos to Cotemar and this thread.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

So I've been searching around for a BBQ for my cabin cruiser and was reading to go with stainless steel models. But I've also been a massive Weber believer and have been using various "Genesis" models since 1995 and love them. So after reading the testimonials here, tomorrow I will be another Weber Q1200, my only problem now is do I get the blue one, the green one.....

Get a darker color one. We got the grey one and it shows smoke stains easily. Great grill.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

I regret not dumping the Magma sooner. Grilled rack of lamb and aubergines with 25 knots at masthead. Behind a large seawall so only about 10- 15 knot crosswind on the Q. No blowouts, grill stayed hot lamb was seared on the outside and juicy on the inside.
attached image but it didn't take.

I am also a convert and just got a Q1000 after reading discussion here. I should dumped Magma and made the switch years ago. I can't count the number of times I'd put some meat on the magma and come back a few minutes later and it had blown out. Not to mention I couldn't make burgers or chicken thighs without starting a huge grease fire. The magma basically knew two settings.......blown out or grease fire infurno.

I used the magma rail mount bolted to a 18x10 inch sheet of starboard. Then bolted the Q to the starboard.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

Thought I would add, I have decent room on the aft deck so I bought a child's table from Cosco and stand my Weber on it. The height is decent, combining the height of the table and the grill. Had my first two BBQ's, night one was steak which turned out great and night two was Chicken with a wet Montreal Steak rub, was really good. I found the heat to be pretty even.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

I had bought a Weber after going through several Magma. I believe it is 2 mm it does not blow out in the Wind and it is made from aluminum so no corrosion it's been about 4 months and so far I am very happy with this

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

I've ordered a FP Astrea 42 for pick up in 2020. I've used a Weber Q for a decade and have cooked everything in it from meat to bread to veggies to birthday cakes.

The oven we have been quoted by MHS is about AUD $3000 and the Sovereign BBQ is about AUD $1650 - AUD $4650 all up.

The Weber costs about AUD $450.

Has anyone forgone an oven in the gallery and just used a Weber instead?

What downsides of not having an oven am I missing here?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

I know Aussie prices can be crazy on certain things, like cars, but I bought (Canadian dollars) a Force 10, two burner with oven for about $1100 or close, memory fuzzy now, bought in the summer.

Here is a link to the Australian distributor of Force 10's. I have used babeques as ovens, often, they work well. Something about having a "normal" oven though, even as I surprisingly realize, I'm not sure why....lol.
