Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

Hey Topmast,
Could you post some pictures of what you mean by seating on the Davits? I've got a center cockpit as well, and I'm looking for some ideas as to how I can increase the ondeck seating area.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

Teddy, I've sold the boat but she still operates as 'Three hour Sail' in Victoria .Lots of pics on You tube and his home page . Look to older east coast schooners for ideas. Davits are sorta long J bent pipes laid over to the left .and supported at the transom .Hang out far enough for dingy hoist. I had a wooden slat seat .hinged at top to cross pipe and in the middle so it could fold out of the way or open up horizontal to be big table. Solar panels were over the dingy .The seat overhung the transom so could be used as a head but I never cut the hole. Multi use is good ,careful planing good ,really stong is good. Barbi was outboard on port side because I have a drink in my right hand Winch for dingy on other side As Thane is a 18 pass. party the stern became the place where the Alpha guests hung out, Choice.Always good to share my ideas with sailors. Len.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

Is this her? Seems like a really good idea, but I'm having trouble seeing how it folds out into a table. I think I'm going to have to do some CAD'ing. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

Thats her. The seat bottom is suported by pins and pockets on the davit vertical pipe. (curved) The two panels are hinged together so it can flip up or down. The seat back is also hinged to the cross pipe. So the whole shebang can be lifted up level with the solar panels and there's the table. I had do that so I could climb in/out of the dingy off the stern. Being handy with SS ,it was easy to fabricate the really strong straps and hinges needed and the pipes were hot dip galvanized. In 30 yrs not a speck of rust .Only thing I'd change was make it wider so more butts could fit and maybe side seats but it was pretty successful as is

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

We have one of these:

It's made with quality materials, but in their ad copy, they state:

"The truly innovative Dickinson Sea-B-Que Round, combines legendary quality, a tough round design and the rugged good looks that makes for an unbeatable marine grill. Use with a 1 lb green disposable bottle of propane or hoses are available for larger propane tanks. This design also prevents flame outs in the windiest of conditions."

That has NOT been our experience. Ours will blow out in 2-3 knots of wind!

This Cruiser's Forum thread has motivated me to finally write them about it.
We shall see if they respond with constructive advice, and I will post it here.

Stay tuned.

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

I received advice from Dickinson suggesting all the things I've already tried.
They wanted to help and even offered a new regulator.
After thinking about it for awhile, I decided to do a little bit of reengineering.
Instead of having a full opening all across the front and back where the catch tray sits, I used a couple of pieced of thin guage titanium I had lying around to make the whole base into an air intake plenum with narrow slots across the top for air intake.
It worked, even on the lowest setting in 15 knots of wind !

Re: Weber Q1200 Grill on a boat

Mmm, what a great idea! I have a Baby Q 1200 that I can mount on my boat, however, for the life of me, I cannot see how Cotemar managed to bolt his into the Magma Dual Extended rail mount.

Did you drill holes into the Weber feet on the flat surface? If so, the Magma mount thru holes do not seem to match the 9 inch distance between the Weber base. Perhaps you only drilled holes on the two back feet of the Weber. Is that enough to keep the grill steady and secure?

According to Magma (http://www.magmaproducts.com/Product...dimensions.pdf), the dimensions between thru holes on the mount is 4 1/2". Hence, only the farthest holes from the clamps could be used to bolt the Weber into the mount. But the grill would not be bolted from the front legs. Is that correct? The mount is long enough (11 1/8"), but only to rest the grill on top not to secure each one of the four legs.

Am I missing something?

Any clarification would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Rodrigo

Magma is having "Reward for Lifestyle Images" in which the winner gets 50% off the purchase of a new Magma. I propose we inundate Magma with images of us throwing their grills overboard.

Anybody find a miracle cleaner to clean the outside of the lid where the smoke escapes and leaves a greasy brown stain?

Thanks for the laugh! I remember my wife doing a joy dance when we deep sixed our Magma kettle in about 2000 feet of water. Burial at sea seemed appropriate.
