Should it stay or should it go?

Working on my new old boat this Winter and I'm debating if I should remove the watermaker. It's going to Lake Superior this Spring for weekend sailing/work vacation time.

The unit is the 12v PUR Powersurvivor 35 in perfect working condition with all the chemicals, filters, ect. The previous owner really was proud of this thing, told me how expensive it was, how well it works, and all the preventative maintenance he did on blah blah but I just don't think I'll need it.

I'll be on the boat every weekend in the Summer but it's not like I'm going to be "out" anchored for more than a night or two until my vacation weeks. The Marina has power, water, showers, and all the other comforts. If I have to haul a jerry can of water to the boat for cooking/drinking for overnights I'm thinking no big deal.

Plenty of other things I need and can spend money on refitting this Winter unless this watermaker isn't worth anything on resale or so little it's worth leaving in? Please tell me if I'm off track here before I pull this thing.

If you are not going to be using it in the foreable future, as someone who makes and sells water makers, I would pull it off the boat and sell it. Don't let it sit there and rot away losing value. Sell it and use the cash on something you need. There are plenty of folks out there that would love to buy that unit of yours.

Where are you Syd? You might even find someone who would buy the unit and pull it out.

I understand STD and I won't let it rot away, I'm extremely meticulous with mechanical equipment I own. Having not owned one before I'm just wondering if it's worth it for boat resale/use/maintenance/freshwater especially if they are only worth pennies on the dollar if I remove it or keep it. If you tell me it's still worth $1500 it's gone - almost what I paid for boat.

The boat is in MN (St. Paul) now and will be going to Bayfield WI in the Spring.

yep...I see a WORKING unit going for $1000 to $1500 all the time. I would fire it up, verify it is working, and then list it on the CF for sale section along with some other cruiser chat rooms like the SSCA.ORG.

In the 1980s & early 90s we drank mostly lake water, directly from Superior (Cdn N. Shore).

Syd it is one of the best pieces of equipment I have, but if you are not cruising for extended periods, it won't be much use!! I would keep it though, but I keep everything
