Well I skimmed ll the posts on toxins, but I'm on holiday and may have killed a few brain cells so don't quiz me. Bottom line...for me...is that unfiltered ocean water is not something I would want to use for cooking, per se. Heating up sealed items, sure. And no qualms about RO water, have reaped the benefits of RO water in many regions with non-potable water. I mean, we all need an immune system, but all those little critters just sort of flip me out. :-)

Re: Vacuum Food Sealer - Critique My Idea

FWIW,

Early on we tried using sea water for cooking things -- rice, pasta etc -- and it is WAY too salty for this use. If the math in post 38 is correct (and it looked ok to me), a litre of water would have the equivalent of around four teaspoons of salt in it! This is a LOT more than one adds to fresh water for cooking these things... yuck!

But, I surely don't worry about the contaminants in offshore seawater after boiling... well, when I get through worrying about meteor strikes, I might take up this issue!

Cheers,

Jim

Re: Vacuum Food Sealer - Critique My Idea

Purchased our unit from Costco 8 years ago and use it all the time. Just shipped a roll of 80 charts to Europe by using the roll of plastic. We've stored parts, books, winter clothes we no longer need and charts. Seldom use it for food. Love it.

Re: Vacuum Food Sealer - Critique My Idea

Besides our Foodsaver, we started using these recently:

They seem to work as well or maybe even better.... keeping their vacuum I mean.

On seawater: what you should do with it is put it through the watermaker. You can't cook healthy with it because, as others observed, there is too much salt in it. Ask your doctor

Heating vacuum packed food in seawater is okay of course but I don't see the advantage of that compared to a microwave. The microwave is more energy efficient for sure.

cheers,
Nick.
