Think I should get a pressure cooker... What size?

Title says it all.

What size(s) do you have and have you ever wished it was bigger/smaller?

Mine is 6 litres. There are only the two of us but it's perfect for us and for when we have guests. Anything smaller would be a problem when double decker cooking (meat in bottom and rice on trivet for example) or when making Christmas pudding!

We have a 10-quart p/c, which is great for making stews, chili, etc but can be a little too big. We're now shopping for a 2-quart to have on board as well which we think would get more use.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Think I should get a pressure cooker... What size?

I have a 6 lt and a 9 lt one (both Tefal, also known as SEB). The smaller one lives and is used in campervan or on boat, big enough for meals for 4 people.
When buying a new one, check for diameter and how that fits on your stove. Generally higher is better, as it also allows the of use stackable trivets.
Note: size is generally marketed with the pot filled to the rim, but when used in cooking one has to stay ~5 cm (ie up to 2 inches) below that. Again that favours narrow and high pots as opposed to fat and low pots.
Of course the 3 main advantages are:
* shorter cooking time
* therefore minimising gas or fuel use
* minimise dishes

get both ... seriously.

You can get a small and large pan with an interchangeable pressure lid and a glass lid.

E.g. Jago SKTS02 Pressure cooker: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home

or

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fagor-FUTURE...ressure+cooker

there are others.

We carry a 4 qt. and a 6 qt. Bigger than that will not share burners on our stove well.

Re: Think I should get a pressure cooker... What size?

Hi Pwillems,

I invested in a 6 litre/ 22cm diameter pressure cooker in November last year. I normally cook for 2 and was worried that it might be too big, but its turned out perfect and great for larger recipes for 4-6. I haven't tried stove top bread yet, but it looks like the size will produce something half reasonable.

Make sure that you measure your cooker, that the pressure cooker will fit in the pan holders and that you have somewhere to stow it. On my model you can only use 2/3rds of the capacity, so check this out when you get yours.

Fair winds and smooth seas,

MooseMarine

PS This is my first pressure cooker and I love it!

Re: Think I should get a pressure cooker... What size?

We have three sizes. most I use the biggest because we have a freezer for the left overs. We also use a seal-a-meal for all the stuff we over cook. I is also used for all the fresh fish we caught. Use the pressure cooker to cook has limited the amount of propane we kept on board to only 3 gal over a half year. We sailed over 9 months to New Zealand on only 3 gal of propane mostly using the pressure cooker for big meals
good luck,
Dilligaf

Re: Think I should get a pressure cooker... What size?

6qt Fagor Chef.... replaced the previous 500 year old 6 quart one I had for 20 years... happy with the size... normally cooking for between 2 and 4.

Still have a 125 year old one down on the campo but it hasn't been used in a while https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressu...about_1864.jpg

Edited to add.... I bought a 'handless' one for ease of stowage... have since realised that a handle may have been a better option at sea ...one hand for yourself..one hand for the ship... http://www.fagoramerica.com/cookware...chef_line/chef
