Not so easy, outside of the UK - but a similar tea-time treat can be made with a pancake mix (the sort with eggs and milk - not boxed powder like Americans use) with a little baking soda. Fried up, Yummy! Flatter than crumpets, but close!

A few years ago, I was vacationing at Little Dix Bay resort in Virgin Gorda - BVI. It is a luxurious five-star resort, with British etiquette throughout. During an afternoon's tea time, I requested a "Coke" from the server instead of tea. Guests in attendance, looked at me with disgust...and probably assumed that I was one of the "savages" who has no respect for tradition. I was shown a box that had at least fifty varieties of tea, to pick from. I didn't even know that so many teas existed! The only tea I knew was Lipton (in tea bags), and Green Tea served by Arab Bedouins. Not to make a fuss, I requested a cup of Lipton..."crumpets, sweet cookies, etc...?", I was then asked... To make the story short, tea time became snorkeling time after my first invitation.

Agree with all you have said except the temp for green tea - 60 to 85 degrees is generally best. I always use fresh water rather than reboiling it, but I had never heard about not letting it boil vigorously (thanks for the tip).

I will have to experiment some more -thanks. Although not a big drinker of white teas, I have a friend who brews me some occasionally and I seem to recall it was brewed around 80. I must say it was delightful to drink.

Yes and as does the local water. For a really good cuppa in Perth, the water should be filtered first. Presumably the same elsewhere

Nothing wrong with Orange Pekoe; Fortnum and Mason produce a fantastic Darjeeling Broken Orange Pekoe blend perfect for the afternoon cuppa.

However it should be noted that term Orange Pekoe has a range of meaning and therefore can mean different things depending on the context it is used in. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_leaf_grading as one reference.

Im like Boatie with tea I boil it and add milk and sugar! But only very seldom ! REAL Coffee rules aboard our boat ! French roast and Itialian Roast, heavy coffee that makes your eyes open wide ! With half and half,(ya can get it in small containers that need no refrig!!) Nothing like that first cup at sunrise in the cockpit ! makes the day a lot more brite and happy ! Tea just don't have the bang I need in the morning ! but then us dumb colonials just don't know what to do with tea except to throw it overboard LOL

Blimey, don't let my husband read this thread, I just finally got him trained to make a perfect cup of tea.

Water must be boiling
Tea cup must be small with thin rim( mugs -bug off!)
Tea, 2bags, good quality black is the only kind worth drinking
Steeped 3 minutes
Little bit of turbinato sugar
Lots of half-n-half ( or smidgen of real cream)

Loose leaf is great but too messy on the boat

Might be moot point loose leaf tea is increasingly hard to find in the US. Many stores have a hundred varieties of teabags but no loose leaf. Liptons tea bags are OK but I can taste the bag. Liptons loose leaf tea is pretty good.

We bought a little two cup stainless steel tea pot online, like the ones you see in Australian and British restaurants. It is indestructible on the boat, easy to stow and makes a nice hot cuppa

No, with scones LOL.
Topped with boat-made jam or marmalade (and leftovers are brilliant toasted with cheese and tomato an freshly cracked pepper, without the jam that is ).
