Sourcing ammonia

We use the stuff for laundry to save on water usage. Here in the Great Satan it can be found anywhere, but we have had a much harder time finding it in SE Asia. We found it in Phuket at the Supercheap pharmacy in small quantities mixed with a lot of other stuff and on the expensive end of things. In Malaysia shopkeepers just smile and shake their heads. Anybody else using ammonia? Where did you find it?

the only ammonia on my boat is produced by my cat. i use the local favorite laundry detergent. even when at sea--at which time i will also wash my laundry in sea water, dry and then rinse in fresh. doesnt take but about a gallon then to rinse with. and clothing doesnt smell like ammonia. (i remember well my grandma's laundry--she used ammonia.)

Is it possible they call it something else there? Try a pharmacy again. Old-fashioned pharmacies still sell aromatic spirits of ammonia (to revive people who swoon from the vapors) and the druggist may know of a source for the laundry version.

Ammonia (anhydrous ammonia), or azane, is a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen with the formula NH3.
"Household ammonia" or "ammonium hydroxide" is a solution of NH3 in water. Household ammonia usually ranges in concentration from 5 to 10% ammonia, whereas commercial ammonium hydroxide is usually 30% concentration.

Ammonia, by any name, is also hard to find in may places in the S Pacific. I agree, it is great for laundry, but doesn't get out all the stains. It uses very little water, and the best part is you only wring out the laundry once. Ashore, i use their facilities.
