Re: Secret Sailors Food

There's a lot of talk about the 'love it or hate it' Marmite. I happen to love it on toast with baked beans on top. BUT... nobody has talked about Bovril on a boat! Instant fantastic hot drink with I believe, no calories! Easy to make and so good on a cold night under the stars. Also, Bovril on toast in the morning...amazing!

You don't need a stand for it.. most folk just hang it by the hock with a dish underneath to catch the drips..
One German guy I know goes through a leg every 2 weeks.. it hangs in the cockpit of his Cat and e carves a slice every time he passes it..
Hi boatman61
as you said love it or hate it..... a bit to salty but a couple freshly cut slices with a couple glass´s of red Portuguese wine will make a great afternoon enjoying the moment and company.
regards and safe trip back "home"

25 years ago, I would have commented on the poor wines of Spain. Now, apart from specific varietals which I have no affinity with, you would be hard pressed to find a poor Spanish wine. I can go into any restaurant in Mallorca and get a more than reasonable glass of red or white.

Portugal appears to be the new new boy on the block producing world class wines and winning a lot of awards.

My taste has changed over the years. Still an avid fan of Australian and French wine, I always have and continue to have little interest in South African wines and care little for parts of Italy or Greece in general, (although a huge fan of the quirky Retsina), I have moved from Red to white wine as my choice of flavour.

That said......... Spain is doing a suprisingly good job and extracting good taste from local grapes by keeping up with the times.

Actuality Portugal as been producing good or excelent wines for a very long time. The only diference is that until now with exception of comercial wines like ex: "lancers" theire were not known. We have started promoting them worl wild by marqueting companies and the result as been out standing with several wines winning the top rates at Wine shows all over the world. regards.

I am fortunate to live in spain, and can tell you I drink an ice cold Rosado, which is fantastic for just 1.70€ a bottle! Try getting that value anywhere else!

Oh dear.
All wine is real.
Its just down to personal taste.
I personally do not care for the majority of Portugese wine. Fortunately for Portugal a lot of people do like it.

I even like Greek Retsina. A lot.

I completely agreed with you. Its a question of tast and on that there isn´t possible discussion.
hope you have the chance to visit us in Portugal and will invite you for some wine tast, maybe able to change your felling about Portuguese wines.
regards

Disclosure..... I owned an apartment and House in Mallorca since '86 and sold recently. I still have a medical clinic there. Possibly spend 5-6 months a year visiting. Im back in the UK and missing it already.

Been to Portugal several times and hope to visit Boatie when he is settled in a few months. Love Portugal. Love one or two Portugese Whites but for the life of me the names escape.
