A meanace that will not happen just because we do not speak about it. I came accross a very simple but effective rat bait. I tried it once in my factory and the rats totally dissapeared.

I am told that rats are extremely inteligent, once they ate something toxic they seem to advise their friend not to eat the bait. This behaviour was also confirmed by a UK researcher.

I used a half a cup of wheat meal. one desert spoon of motar, three desert spoons of salt and 6 teaspoons with sugar. I mixed this well and placed it in a bottle cap in their pathway. Next to that i placed another lid containing water.

The rats left and have not returned. I know this is not green advice for animal lovers but when a rat is gnawing at your electric wires and through pipes i guess my animal loving ends right there!

If I had a rat(s) aboard I'd much rather trap them than poison them and let them die at the bottom of some locker (surely the fullest one and the hardest to empty).

I have a ship's cat for such occasions as rodent stowaways.

Yeah, I keep a dog onboard just in case of a feline infestation myself.

My cats were the reason I had a rat on board...

The rules were simple I thought. If you have to bring it home, it has to be dead and in any case it cannot be in my bed...

Nope... They decided that rats are more fun alive and kicking (so are crayfish but that's another story altogether...). As soon as they were done playing, the rat made a bee line for the bilge. I spent a week trying to trap the darn thing.

One must trap rats on a boat. Use a huge trap and tie it to something. Poison bait is a poor idea because the rat will crawl into some inaccessible place to die. A dead rat is the only thing worse than a live one. Sticky traps fail because the rat is often wet from being in the bilge or just coming aboard.
