Provisioning in the Leewards

Hello, we just arrived to the Carib. And looking for inexpensive provisioning. We're in Dominica now and it's pricey. We're good for another couple of weeks, and heading north towards the VI's

If your provisioning is canned goods... its dear all over as its all imported...
BVI's... heavy tourism = very expensive..
I've found the cheapest way to live in the Carib is to shop at the weekly markets they have in places like Marigot on the french side of SM... or St Johns, Antigua... its all local produce so lasts longer than the supermarket stuff which has been chilled for transport...
Meat and poultry's cheaper to if you like the bony cuts of meat like ribs etc... and are prepared to clean the chicken yourself tho'...
they'll only kill it after you pay...

Sint Maarten has American-style groceries and St lartin (French) has produce markets. Most produce comes from Guadalope or the US. As everything is imported, it is more expensive but you can get everything you need here.

If you're in Dominica, stop in Guadeloupe, large supermarkets, somewhat pricey but not as bad as the smaller islands, or the Virgins. Otherwise Sint Maarten.

Guadeloupe has good grocery stores. There's a really nice on in St Francois. Jolly Harbour, Antigua has a good one a short walk from the marina. French side of St Martin, as mentioned. The grocery in Red Hook, St Thomas is very good, with nice meats and fish. None of these are "bargain" markets.

You can find reasonably priced local fruits, vegetables and fish in local markets. The Saturday market in Portsmouth, Dominica is probably the cheapest in the West Indies, and the freshest. "Shelf" groceries are relatively expensive throughout the islands, as everything has to be shipped in from elsewhere.
