Re: Prepper Boat Thread

Can I plug my newest book here? http://amzn.to/1WdYqbe

I pitched International Marine with the idea of a prepper cookbook aimed at boaters, campers and others who have pantry food on hand for positive reasons, not doomsday. They agreed. It's about supermarket food, not high-priced survival rations, and about using pantry foods regularly to keep supplies fresh and interesting. The aim is to aid anyone in buying and stowing food, then making great meals using shelf-stable supplies.

If it ever comes unglued, doesn't matter where you're at.
The havenots will band together to pillage the haves.
Way it's always been. Sadly it's human nature.

Re: Prepper Boat Thread

There are two books that I read in Jr. high that deal with the post apocalypse world, Alas Babylon and Earth Abides. I have thought about being prepared ever since reading these books.

Earth Abides lays out a very logical scenario to what would happen to civilization if a large portion of the human race was killed.

Alas Babylon deals with a small group of people trying to survive in a post nuclear world.
The last line in this book will be burned into your brain when you read it.

Are boats a good option in an apocalypse? Depends if zombies can swim.

Yes, but canabalism isn't a survival technique, especially when the zombie virus is running rampant.

Well not exactly right according to the walking dead TV series . There were several people that were cannibalistic. ( gotta love Hollywood)

I see getting out of Dodge being much more survivable than thinking you can fortify your compound in the mountains and hold off the Zombies.

I can see as how having a well stocked long range cruising vessel might not be a bad idea, some were even considering it during the recent Ebola outbreak.

Nothing that I can think if is as self sufficient as a long range cruising vessel?
Ah, a rational train of thought...uhmm...just answered your first question.

Parks--

You might find William Forstchen's book "One Second After" presents a somewhat more plausible scenario for "survivalist" thinking/rationale. It deals with the effects of an "EMP" attack on the USA given the US's dependence on electronics for even what most would think the most elemental services/utilities, heat, light, water supplies, fuel etc. The possibilities are quite real and the "attack" might not come from deranged Mullahs. It could as easily come from a Solar eruption pointed in earth's direction. It seems that, in the US, the Pentagon has already been preparing for such an event but there has been little done to prepare/protect civilian infrastructure. With that, having one's boat "prep'd" has much to recommend it provided one is not dependent upon electronics as most/many seem to be these daze.

FWIW...

If you look at the macro economics, the "haves" have been pillaging the "have nots" for millenea.
Just because "it's always been" does not mean the status quo must be maintained.

Actually a CME ( coronal mass ejection) is not like an EMP. It will not likely cause much damage to electronics in that way . A CME is much more likely to take out the main transformers at power generation stations and main transmission hubs. It has been discussed rather extensively in the past on here in other threads.
