Night Watch

What's your favorite pocket fuel when standing night watch? I like (1) a thermos of hot water so I can make coffee, tea, instant grits or whatever I feel like at the time. Ginger tea is good when I'm feeling queasy. (2) in cold weather, a hot, hardboiled egg in each pocket of my slicker. They're handwarmers and, after they cool, a meal. (3) bite size whole wheat cereal, perhaps with some nuts. It's sugar and salt free, nutritious and rich in fiber. We call it "brillo pads". I'm a morning person so I can be asleep by 8 p.m., up at midnight and good until first light.

A good female companion. Conversation (I say about 2 sentences every 30mins ;-) ) keeps me up the whole night ;-)))

Re: night Watch

Well in my pockets I keep the Zippo butane-fired catalytic heaters.

I do like hard-cooked eggs for snacks - getting the darn shells off is good for quite a bit of time.

Re: Night Watch

Since we usually leave in November to head south, I buy Halloween candy the day after Halloween. These small pieces become my night watch treats. Perfect size!

pilot bread, cheese, and a thermos of coffee. A few lemon drops to suck on are nice too.

Re: Night Watch

Snickers bars and Jolly Ranchers (hard candy) will fuel me for many hours. Much as I love coffee, I can't make it, pour it, and drink it with just one hand, and anything that requires two hands means too few hands left to be on watch.

Never met a bag of Snickers bars that survived over 8 hours after being discovered on a boat though.<G>

Re: Night Watch

While candy bars, coffee, tea, soup, and cookies all have merits, when we went transatlantic the cook always left bread, peanut butter, and jelly out in the galley - just in case.
