I've also have a light, cheap (K-Mart) "wharf" rod and reel for fishing at anchor.

Re: Need Fishing Gear Advice
550 cord is five individual nylon lines encased in a protective cover, it's very strong and lasts pretty well, UV being of course what eventually degrades it, but the cover protects the individual lines.
May sound silly but if your handlining, don't wrap the line in your hand, you can literally be pulled into the water by a big fish.

Re: Need Fishing Gear Advice
Hi All,
How does one attach a line/hook using a Hand Line, 550 para cord setup?
Anyone got any pics or tutorial at all please?
Thanks.

Re: Need Fishing Gear Advice
We use larger 2 speed reels. We have caught several larger dolphin and tuna and it makes life nice not having to stop the boat. Our pure of choice pink or blue rattle jets. Everything likes em. We use an occasional handling a d its funny how easy it can be bringing g a good size fish in.

Probably many ways and being sailors you guys would laugh at my tieing skills. But I would use at least 6 ft maybe more of SS leader wire with a swivel between the wire and the cord

Dolphin-fish, not Flipper. Trendy resturants took to calling them Mahi Mahi so as not to freak out guests.

Yes, it's what old timers call Mahi- Mahi or whatever its called now.
I believe the name was changed because tourists wouldn't eat Flipper or maybe fancy name = higher prices

Got me thinking now. Do Dolphin actually go for bait/lures, or are they smarter than that?

Also look up how to form eyes using swages. Good secure way to connect heavy mono and wire. Single strand wire is prone to kinking and breaking...should be made up carefully and inspected before each use. After several frustrating break offs due to this I've gone to multi-strand wire.
I also use multistrand wire as a bite leader for trolling rods. For braid backing I rig a section of heavy mono between the wire and braid as a shock leader. (More applicable to trolling reels than hand lines).
Also, learn how to tie a UniKnot. Good for the vast majority of fishing applications from attaching lures and terminal tackle to joining lines.

I have a swage tool and a whole box full of them, I like plastic coated multi-strand myself. I use the swedges when I replace the line between my spear guns and the spear
I'll look up the Uniknot, thanks

I have never heard of them going for it, I've caught most everything else though, even seagulls, but I believe somehow Dolphins know better.
