Manual Can Opener - Recommendations ?

I can't believe that we all have the time to discuss the merits of a can opener.

Here is one that worked flawlessly for me for a number of years.

It is a P38. My first one came free in a box of C rations.

If interested, you can buy one of these for 99 cents or less...search the Internet.

I have one of those on my Key chain. I use it a lot. Works great. doesn't take much room. I did get some funny looks from airport security but they let me keep it.

There are two variants of cutters. One that cuts into the top of the can and one that makes a very clean cut on the outside edge. I second any opener that cuts the outside edge for a couple of reasons.

• When putting the top back on, it often actually makes a "seal" with the can that you can even use clingwrap to more effectively hold in place. You can also reuse lids on like sized cans.
• Less chance to cut your hands or puncture other things nearby.
• Does not push bacteria into the can.
• Makes reusing the can for other things such as paintbrush holder much cleaner.
• If the can is suffering from botulism it wont explode in your face. NOT a fun experience.

Find one that grabs the can firmly and cuts on the outside edge.

p38s make excellent fallback openers and never fail .
the side cutting kind i found lasts only until the plastic parts become smoothed out--took mine all of 3 years todo that--
my swing away may be foogly but it is not plastic and it keeps on working now after 7 yrs, i will keep foogly and forego trendy.

Can't folk integrate the tin opening function with the chartplotter?

Thank heavens that nowadays cans come with tabs that allow us to rip off the top with a mighty tug.

Starfrit... super easy to use, mostly plastic.. no sharp edges.

That's why the Fissler is so cool... it's side-cutting but 100% stainless steel, so you get best of both and you should considering it's price tag.

Yes, the P38s... if only the food that came with them was as good as the opener

Yeah mine does it. Works great except the hookup via NMEA was a pain since it only supported 0183.

p38's suck! they hurt my fingers to use and I always slip and have a terrible time with them! Himself of course is a past master at using them but then he spent 9 months in a jungle practicing... And they are slow...

Get the swingaway. Reasonably priced compared to some of the other options offered here. And don't worry about a bit of rust appearing on the cutting disk. It's not going to rot off and dissolve like a prop shaft with out a zinc. It lives in a drawer and gets a bit rusty. Keep it oiled a bit and you won't have much trouble with it.

Hell the swingaway living in my kitchen drawer is the one from off my grandfathers boat that sat in the galley for at least 15 years and is fine.

I got a new one for the boat so the colour would look better ; -)

would love to find a good one again so i have a spare.but i have a swiss army knife--has a p-38 substitute---works ok
