Limes are limes.

Limes are 'limas' in Spanish.

Lemons are 'limons' in Spanish.

Completely different things. Wonder how anybody can mix up the real things, but I know some can. ;-)

Never heard of "Limas" in Mx or Central America. It's Limon everywhere.

Do not expect Latin Americans to use proper Spanish. They tend to mix up words (mix up - from the old world Spanish perspective). They also have plenty of their own, place specific, vocabulary.

There's a kind of lime we've had, that is the size of the large limes marketed in America, and a fairly dark green skin, but when you cut it, it is ORANGE inside, yet tastes like a lime. Jim calls them "ranjipur limes", sounds like India origin to me.

Then there are the south seas "oranges", also bright green on the outside, but orange on the inside.

We've seen pomplemousse growing, hanging on their trees, grapefruits that are the sweetest ever, and pale lime colored inside.

Then there are bush limes and lemons, thick nobbly skins, as El Pinguino described some posts back.

Amazing variety, and delicious flavours!

Yes. Some big differences from country to country in Latin America.

One example. In various countries I have heard bananas called guineos, platanos or even bananas.

They are grapefruit like, but not grapefruit (citrus x paradisi). There is an interesting Caribbean twist to the whole story too:

"... Grapefruit is a hybrid originating in Barbados as an accidental cross between two introduced species, sweet orange (C. sinesis) and pomelo or shaddock (C. maxima),..."

C. maxima is off course Citrus maxima, that is, a pamplemousse!

Just thinking of pamplemousses makes my mouth water. We had them on Mangareva first. Here (Spain) we can only buy them around Chinese New Year when they bring it for their own festivities.

There is a German liquor named Specht. It is said to be based on pamplemousse. I tried it: very good. Low alc.

BTW Last time in the West Indies we 'discovered' half-bitter oranges. They are not as bitter as Sevilla oranges, nor sweet like the regular breeds.

Anybody knows the proper name of this fruit perhaps?

It's a poor substitute for Persian limes, which are a poor substitute for Key limes, but I'm a big fan of Emergen-C, which is available in lemon-lime. It's portable, stowable, affordable, lighter to carry than bottled lime juices (which need refrigeration after they are opened.) . It's made from real fruit and is good for you. Great mixer with rum (which is also good for you, LOL).

Lemons are a far better antiscorbutic ...

The Royal Navy only started using limes when they were denied access to Iberian lemons during the Napoleonic wars.

Simply the best scurvy preventative is Pisco Sour .... equal parts of antiscorbutic, energy and antidepressant all in the one glass.

El Ping, an analogous thought: the venerable G&T is in fact the healthiest drink known to man, for the lime keeps you from getting scurvy, the quinine keeps you from getting malaria and the gin keeps you from getting sober.

And Pisco is hard to find at Dan Murphy's.

I will refrain from replying to the above by stating that the English (and associated offsprings) have them up for the rest besides rum. Not because I enjoy British cuisine 😊 but because that would infer that I agree with said above statement.

In fact, rum lovers will make sure they buy their rum in Martinique, or even better, at the Père Labat distillery in Marie Galante, off Guadeloupe. Other Caribbean islands make their rum in a different way (with molasses) and the result is lacking compared to good "rhum agricole".

Of course I know tastes and colors... But as a rum lover, could not let that one go unchallenged ! 🍹
