Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
Hi all,
I am now officially signed up for the Baja-Haha, which leaves San Diego in October for the tip of Baja. With that in mind, I am busy prepping my boat in all manner of ways. In the galley I currently have both a toaster oven and microwave, which both came with the boat. I don't see the need for either, but I wanted to ask all of you who cruise, are these items worth keeping aboard? Or are they something to lose in favor of gaining valuable counter space?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers, Bill

We have neither, but also have no way to power either. Never missed them either.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
We never had a toaster oven on board, but when we did buy our boat, it did have a small microwave on board. After it broke down, we never bought a replacement, and haven't regretted that decision. I have no need for either, but to each their own.

We have and regularly use both. If we had to toss one the microwave would go first. We frequently cook a whole meal in the toaster oven while underway. Of course to do that you also need an inverter capable of powering the oven.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
We have a microwave. Came with the boat in a built-in cubby. It doesn't take up counter space and we do use it on occasion. As much as we love our toaster oven at home, we do without it on the boat.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
Thanks for the opinions so far. I thought I would add that I only use the microwave ashore to heat my "fake" lattes. Don't even have a toaster oven on shore.
Cheers, Bill

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
We don't have a toaster oven but do have a microwave that is built into a bulkhead. We have used it to make popcorn three times while in a marina in the past five years but its real use is as a breadbox and egg storage. It can also be used to store electronics in during a thunderstorm.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
We have an old fashioned toaster. It is probably more efficient than a toaster oven if all you do is toast and biscuits. We also have a smallish microwave. We only use these two items hooked up at a dock with shore power. Its nice to have them. Saves propane, fast and not so hot.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
I would toss both, but then I am usually at anchor and wouldn't have the power to run either.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
Microwave - we use ours regularly (even if we do do coffee in a thermos!); built in and we have an inverter
Toaster oven - I can't even begin to imagine having a resistance fired electrical appliance aboard
OK, someone would say so's a microwave... And our hot water heater, but only when plugged, never on the inverter.
Anyway, all this has proved is that it doesn't matter one whit what we think.
Your boat, your choice.

^^Bottom line.^^ If you use the darned things and have the power to do so, keep them. If you don't use them, and don't have the power, don't keep them.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
We've had a microwave on-board our new to us boat for the last year. When we get back to a dock, we are going to unload it. The space is more valuable than the few times we've used it.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
ditch em, honey--you will not be using them here in mexico. i promise.
unless you will be living in marinas with lots and lots of power..hahahaha...then ditch em.
if you cannot live without real toast---keep the toaster oven so you can have some, as it doesnt exist here.....but, then, live in a marina, so you can use it.
if you would rather carry spares than have real toast, ditch em......
there are so many things you could carry instead o f those so rarely used items.
tacos do not microwave well--do ditch that.
oh yes--if you are a coffee drinker and enjoy dark roast coffee, stock up with lots and lots--isnt available here in mexico until you achieve banderas bay...then is good and not too pricey.
if you like root beer floats----load upon root beer---they do have ice cream here, but not root beer.....
uhoh----forgot to welcome ye....welcome to cf.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?
We have both and a bread maker, and use all 3 with both a inverter or a gen set when we are chargeing batts. Would never leave without them ! but then we don't claim to be tough cruisers, just cheap cruisers!! I guess it's ok not to have them ! But the folks who don't have them seem to have all the latest electronics, like AIS ect ect. So I guess you can be tough with somethings and not with other things ?? I think this will make sense for some, but we like our fresh bread and ya can do some great things with fish in a toaster oven !! Just our old lazy 2 cents LOL
