Over here we have great butane/propane two burner and grill stoves... a melted cheddar cheese n tomato on toast is magic halfway through a cold night watch... gotta be English cheese though...
US cheese is like their Budwieser... and most European cheeses don't melt well at all

rh, you have yet to arrive in mexico, i am afraid--lol....is much better south of mazatlan and even more south of banderas bay.
toasters are good convenience items. my friend who sails with me and helps repair stuff has one, so we indulge occasionally--requires a generator for use. blts are best on real toast.......

I'm really glad you didn't try calling it beer. It is one of the most horrible "drinks" in the world. They should outlaw it.

They have cheese that was already melted before selling it, like 2nd hand food. Called Velveeta or something... it's horrible. They put that same stuff in squeeze bottles and macaroni too

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?

First, do you have a generator? If so, keep the microwave. It can save heating up the galley using the stove when in the tropics. (Ditto for a bread machine if you have one.) But personally I would toss the toaster oven. Those things use way too much electricity.

Our microwave also has a broiler function as well as a convection oven function. I wouldn't live on the boat without it. But we also have a good generator for using the microwave when not in a marina.

Velveeta is awesome on macaroni noodles!!! and if you happen to have an ulcer it will suffice as a whole stomach internal bandage, sort of like tire slime!!

There are all kinds of cheeses produced in the US as well as different US brands of the same type cheeses. As in most things, you get what you pay for. Buy the cheap 'cheese' and you are most likely buying an imitation processed cheese product and not real cheese. There are Wisconsin cheddar cheeses that rival any English cheddar. And then there are the supermarket cheap imitations. Frankly, my favorite for cooking is Longhorn cheese because it melts the best. The English cheddars tend to raise up oil on top when melted rather than melt into a creamy texture.

As for Budweiser, you might have a point. Never tasted the stuff.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?

Unless your microwave is built-in, pitch both the toaster and m/w. You don't use either much in MX. You can always toast on the 'barby' if you can't live without it. Consider both space and power consumption unless you have a good size power generation system or plan on marina livin'. Good Luck... some of my best years were spent south of the border! Phil

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?

It depends on your space and power source. We have the space, a generator & an inverter. So, we regularly use our toaster oven, microwave/convection oven, and a bread maker.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?

montenido, are you new to this boat, new to cruising, and/or new to living aboard? If yes to any of these questions, why not keep them and see if you use them? If you don't, you can give them away in Mexico. I speak as one who got rid of a perfectly good electric mixer before I moved aboard, only to go out and get a new one when I decided it was a CRUCIAL ELEMENT of cruising kit. Also, my hubby has been pining after toast for 18 months - and we have finally decided that a toaster is yet another NECESSITY. Some boats can't power all this gear - but yours obviously can. Some cruisers swear by cold tinned beans and sporks and scoff at "condo-sailing" - [roll eyes] - but if that's not how you roll... you just don't know what's gonna happen "out there." And by the way, we have a microwave that we use ONLY to protect our iPads from lightening strikes.... hard to get it right, all the time.

Re: Keep or toss Toaster Oven and Microwave?

Hi everybody,

Thanks for the responses - great stuff. Zee and Rebel Heart, I'll look you up when I get down your way . Yes I am fairly new to the boat, new to cruising and have not lived aboard, so there are many unanswered questions still. With that in mind, I think I'll ditch to toaster oven and keep the microwave for now.
BTW, I have about 500ah in batteries, a Honda 2000 genny, 3000 watt inverter, and will be adding solar before departing. My boat actually does have a lot of room inside, including the galley. I am just trying to thin out what is on board so that I have room when I actually provision for cruising. In the year that I have owned Odyssey, I have been removing stuff that the PO left aboard (he just walked away from boating). In fact, I am still finding new stuff hidden away once in a while.

Thanks again everybody for weighing in. Your experience and opinions mean a lot to me .

Cheers, Bill
