How the heck do we use this oven?!

We recently purchased a boat with an oven that looks to be a Dometic brand. The control dials and plates with information on the settings have worn off and therefore we have no idea how to use the dang thing. Since I've never owned a boat with an oven, I'm pretty unfamiliar with the standards. We were able to light it but when we turned the knob counter clockwise (the only direction to go once lit), it goes out. I believe the boat was built in the UK. I've sent an email to a UK company that sells them (Jackson Leisure) but got no response. I also contacted a local company that had no clue.

Anyone have any experience with these? Unfortunately I'm not at the boat (2,000+ miles away at the moment) so I can't fiddle with it but will give it another go in a couple of months when we're back on it. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Take a deep breath! I did not get instructions with my stove either.
There is probably a thermocouple that has to heat up before you let go of the knob. It brevet the gas from flowing if the flame goes out. Any way hold the knob pushed in for 20 seconds to heat the thermocouple, then release the knob.

Edit: I should have said, keep the know pushed in after lighting. Sorry!

Now that's a useful link, Hoosier!

Excellent link! Thank you both for the info.
The only thing I actually was able to figure out was to hold knob in for a while after lighting. So, you're definitely correct on that one! Looking at the manual now so can wait to give it another shot. Thanks!!!!! I'd been searching for that thing to no avail.

Re: How the heck do we use this oven?!

aj676,

With our old oven, I have found that I have to hold in the knob for about 8 seconds, slow count, then the pilot light will stay lit. After that, it will go out after increasing the desired temperature--unless you wait 10 min, then increase the temp. Without any marks, you will want to at least figure out low, med., and hi, and mark the knob and the surround to line up the marks. Use an independent oven thermometer for the calibrations.

Re: How the heck do we use this oven?!

I have a British stove with an oven. On mine there is a red button on the back lower portion inside the oven. I turn on the gas, then hold that as I light it. I need to hold it pressed for several seconds after it ignites, then I can let it go.

I hope this helps.

The reason you have to hold it in for 5-10seconds is to allow the Flame Failure bi-metal strip/device to heat sufficiently to keep the valve open.. if the flame suddenly gets blown out for any reason the strip cools rapidly shutting of the gas supply.
If it still shuts off after a few seconds being held in then released its the Flame Failure needs replacing.
Standard safety device in ovens/waterheaters..

If somebody has been poking around with a fork the end of the sensing tube may be dislodged It should be in the pilot flame to get hot .Needs a visual looksee.

Adding nothing but concern: Suggest you check the system for leaks, including the tank and the stove, with special attention to all fittings. Cooling gases re great, but leaks, even small ones, can produce disasters. Maybe you have already done that. If so, good!

Re: How the heck do we use this oven?!

Yup! We checked all the connections, etc and had a 'sniffer' to make sure it wasn't leaking. I did have a fire extinguisher in my hands though when we tested it out at first. =) We were able to get it lit but couldn't figure out how to get the flame to high, medium and low. If I turned the knob, it went out. Will be back down to it in a couple of months. Can't wait to fiddle with it some more now that I have the manual and some direction! Thanks!
