Re: How Long Do You Provision For?

We live down here in Placencia Belize, you can find whatever you are looking for as long as you are flexible. Odd statement, I know but plenty of food to be had as well as canned goods. No problem with the "free" detergent. Easy check in/out over in Big Creek.
Stop at Yoli's and the new sailor's bar "Bubawuba".

Re: How Long Do You Provision For?

Much good advice here. We sailed beside a Canadian couple who had a fifty gallon, built in rum tank. Not a bad idea except theirs was fiberglass and we could barely choke down the FRP tainted contents. I doubt they declared this when entering a new country.

Re: How Long Do You Provision For?

I always carry a ridiculous amount of backup provisions...stuff like oatmeal, rice and cans. On the few occasions I needed it, I was very glad to have it. The instance that comes first to mind is when I had planned to get supplies at a remote small town I was familiar with, just to find that most of the town had burnt down a few weeks earlier...and there were no stores remaining.

Everything we can possibly carry ... about 5 months.
We've had our share of bicycling over 12 miles of bad roads with 30lb back packspacks.

We love pork but will not eat the stuff they sell in the Bahamas (we don't believe it actually is pork). We love our Kenya Dark AA coffee and always load up for at least six months. There are certain other essentials (beer) that we are fussy about too. We try to avoid paying island prices for quality meat (if available at all) and load the freezer with about 60lbs. of meat we trust.

We just hate going shopping !

AGREE!

Searching for supplies is way more fun than just walking around aimlessly, being a tourist. In a small way, it makes you part of the place. You meet the real people, not just the tourist trained wait staff.

Re: How Long Do You Provision For?

It would depend upon the region. In the Indian Ocean we would stock up to be independent for six months. However, in the Caribbean and Med its only for a max of four weeks. Yes, we do carry a few extra's of favourite basics like toothpaste, but otherwise we eat what is available locally as others have identified. In parts of the Indian Ocean, even staples can be difficult to obtain or can attract the dual pricing arrangement - and loo paper can be very scarce in some places!
