How do you save water aboard

We are finding more ways to save water while living aboard. Something that surprised us was bruising teeth consumed a lot of water. We noticed this about 9 months ago as we made our own toothpaste that did not need water. It saved us about 270 gallons (3 of us in our family) last year. here is our recipe

LOL its not painful, but I understand your mentality. Most people think we are nuts for even living on a boat. Ill make the correction.

Using spray bottles at each sink sounds like a great idea!

Re: How do you save water aboard

I have never really worried about water. We moved on board for a adventures but still want the comforts. On our long stays aboard where we can't get water we are just real carefull. You cab do allot with sea water.

if you're in clean water,,,1.we do alot of cooking with sea-water(rice,noodles,ect)you're boiling the water and using less salt.2.we wash all our dishes with sea-water then use marks' spray bottle to fresh-water rinse.3.use hand pump instead of electric,,,there's lots of ways to save water

I also have a foot pump for the galley faucet and I replaced the faucet nozzle with one that sprays the water instead of just a stream. Kinda like a mini showerhead nozzle.

like solar power,we collect it from the sky!

having watercatchers ready set up provides a fairly endless supply of fresh water!

Re: How do you save water aboard

If you were using 270 gallons of water per year for 3 people just to brush teeth then you do need to work on conservation. If I am doing the math right that works out to about a quart per day per person.

Why so much? Do you leave the tap running while you brush? I could brush my teeth using a half cup or less of fresh water. Instead of making a special, waterless tooth paste why not learn to use less water in the process.

Other suggestions are all pretty standard and mostly already mentioned.

1. Salt water shower with a final rinse of freshwater. Once clean and rinsed with salt water pour just a cup of fresh on your head once or twice, rinse it well through your hair and let it run down your body taking the salt residue away. You should be clean and salt free and no sticky feeling on your skin.

2. Same with dishes.

3. Steam vegetables instead of boiling (it's also healthier). Be careful cooking with salt water as you may end up with over salted food in some recipes.

Other than these I can't think of other places I use fresh water on the boat so no other major savings.
