Has anyone added thermal mass to thier oven?

I am replacing parts and rebuilding a Force 10 oven. I have never used this oven, it came with a boat I just adopted, but many complain of the older force 10s having inconsistent heat. (people complain about all marine stoves having this problem not trying to single out force 10) Since it is apart and the insulation matting is being replaced I was thinking if adding thermal mass could be wise? My wife is an excellent baker and at home puts bricks and pizza stones in the oven when baking to act as thermal mass. There is no room in the gimbled oven for bricks. But there is maybe room to add it interior of the ceramic insulation in the walls. Has anyone tried this. What did you use? Did it help?

Additional notes: The door is pre-window models (DOS if you will). Just numbered dials, so i assume no thermostat. It is the 2 burner version so small thus a larger surface area to volume ratio.

I bought and cut a pizza stone to sit atop the flame shield in our force 10 oven.

Winner!!!! The mass made all the difference!!

Thanks for the encouragement and affirmation, Sailmonkey.

Now debating if adding stone is the way to go, or if I can have something fastened inside. I have access to a CNC plasma cutter that does stainless and beefing up scant-lings of the flame shield is an alternative.

I had wanted to do a big chunk of SS fastened to the flame shield, but decided to do a proof of concept with the stone. Turns out the stone works well enough’

One more for pizza stone. If you can't find one, just get a large piece of ceramic tile. I bake my bread on two of them in the oven at home, I know they last in the heat.

We are on our second pizza stone, the first was a real stone I think, was expensive, “pampered chef” maybe? Anyway broke in several pieces.
The new stone is some kind of synthetic I think from Amazon, much cheaper and hasn’t broken

That’s what we got, it’s a “cultured stone”. Cost a whole $10, so I didn’t feel bad about cutting it to fit.

Lowes cut a black marble floor tile to size for me. It goes over our Seaward Hillerange/Princess Stove's oven heat deflector and is that size. A bit of SS wire holds it in place. We would not be without it. All the muffin bottoms now come out equally brown. Black means you can not see the crud; it always looks clean.

Super idea!

For the OP: I used a ceramic floor tile in my last oven. It had enough moisture in it to break in quarters, but I still used it, never cleaned it, either, and discarded when we got the new stove/oven. It did make a difference, and I think a pizza stone might have done better, but the tile had been extremely inexpensive.

Re: Has anyone added thermal mass to thier oven?

Pizza Stone gets our vote. After trying the stone in the oven with great success, we decided to cut one to fit our outside small propane Force10 grill. Really works well there too and keeps small things, shrimp, from falling through between the wire.

I did the same thing. Works well. I have a Hillagranger.

WOW! I had never thought to do this and I will give it a try. Everyday is a school day here on the forum.

Thank you

I have had the same good results putting my pan on top of a cast iron skillet in the oven

Re: Has anyone added thermal mass to thier oven?

I agree. Stones work well. We and our friends have used them on larger marine ovens (fire bricks not pizza stones per se, but same material). My question is, given the limited space in the little 2 burner stove i just inherited.... and given i am replacing the insulation in my stove this week... Is adding thermal mass to the walls of the stove (exterior of the wall, interior of the insulation) at all advantageous? Has anyone done that?
