Happy Sailor’s Killer Mai Tai

In the spirit of the winter weather and needs of dreaming about the season.... I share my Mai Tai recipe.... Turn up the heat... Turn on the tropical music... And ENJOY!

Happy Sailor’s Killer Mai Tai

Juice = ½ and Rum = ½

JUICE
OK… This is tricky with all of the pineapple/mango/guava/OJ combos and what the store has… I usually revert to pineapple/OJ combo and Kerns mango and guava in cans… just be creative and close….
¼ quality pulpless OJ
¼ Pineapple Juice
¼ Guava juice/nectar
¼ Mango juice/nectar

RUM
1/2 Mt Gay Eclipse Barbados Rum Amber
1/2 Myers Dark
Orgeat Syrup (almond/flower water syrup) to taste (couple of healthy dashes from the bottle… 1 oz?) You can find this at larger liquor stores… Don’t Skip it!

MIX
Combine equal parts juice and rum… I mix this ½ gallon at a time in a pitcher… The flavors will blend and get better if left in the fridge overnight… PS: A 3 gallon batch gets pricey!

DRINK
Pour over cracked ice… squeeze 2 lime wedges and toss them on top…. IMPORTANT STEP…. 1) Stir with index finger…. 2) Lick finger...

Cheers!

What, no coconut rum on top? Love the recipe. I tried it and the orgeat is a neat touch I've never done before. You're right, 3 gal batch is pricey. I wonder how it will turn out in a margarita machine.

Blasphemy!!!

I kid... never did a coconut float with these... I would suspect that it covers the almond nuance...

Emptying a 1.75 of Myers and Mt Gay for a batch will set your wallet back...

Dunno about the marg machine... I prefer my margs on the rocks... I'll bet it would be pretty good ... float the orgeat after??? Hmm...

Re: Happy Sailor’s Killer Mai Tai

Okay, I guess it's my turn. I have spent a lot of time in Southeast Asia and have picked up a few things as I trudged along. Here is one from the old Raj days of the British Empire I picked up in Burma it's called the Pegu Club Cocktail.

2 oz gin
3/4 oz curaçao
3/4 oz lime juice
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash orange bitters

The Pegu Club was a popular hangout for the expats in the days that Rangoon was still open and exotic. Singapore has the Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel. Rangoon had the Pegu Club Cocktail at the Pegu Club. It's quite nice over ice in an old colonial kind of way. Yes, they had ice in Burma 50 years ago.

Re: Happy Sailor’s Killer Mai Tai

Okay folks, Happy and I submitted a drink recipe. Let's keep the thread going and submit your own favorite cocktail, adult beverage or nosh. It is possible this could get good. How about someone's custom homemade rum punch? Malbecs go well with fresh shark. Some ideas please :-)

Re: Happy Sailor’s Killer Mai Tai

Hi all,

Great recipes so far. Here is one that a friend of mine came up with while we were camping in Mexico. We started to run out of some key drinking ingredients, so the Gatorade Margarita was born!

Start with a tall glass with filled with ice
Fill about 1/3 with tequila of choice
Fill to 3/4 with red Gatorade (green also works)
Float a layer of margarita mix over the top
Stir with finger and lick!

It is refreshing in hot weather, and can even be called a sports drink to boot!

Cheers, Bill

Re: Happy Sailor’s Killer Mai Tai

Now we're talking. Anybody got a drink recipe for Tang? It's a mix that can be gotten in most places around the world and goes well with vodka, rum or tequila. I use Tang and grenadine with a cherry for a tequila sunrise. Improvise and overcome. Hooyah!

It's truly amazing what we will consider palatable when faced with limited opportunity!!!!

I too am a veteran of the early years.... SunnyRises.... Tequila/grenadine and Sunny D.... the non refrigerated OJ imposter....

Oh Baja... the memories....

We drank these almost daily when cruising Mexico. Felt so healthy...must have had a ton of Vitamin C!!

My new favorite drink for warm weather is a Cucumber Cooler. It is best with the gin but room keeps me from buying the Hendricks. The cucumber makes it amazingly refreshing!

Cucumber Cooler

Splash lemon
Hendricks Gin or Vodka 1.5 oz
St Germaine 1 oz (Bevmo) elderberry
Sparkling Water or tonic
Simple syrup to taste
Cucumber slices (couple)
