Glass Breakage on Boats

To the person who equates canning in jars with slivers, shards and blood, I can only say that in 10 years that was not a problem on board our 29-foot Botved LA sloop. I save worn-out socks, cut off the knit tops and slip them over glass canning jars and other products that can't be found in other containers (like cheap rum). In my The Galley Book (David McKay) I cover many types of food preservation including drying, corning, candying and canning in both glass and tin. It was fun to learn how to can in steel cans, and the process has many advantages but I have abandoned the can crimper and bulky cans in favor of Mason jars. The book is out of print but used copies are available from Amazon.

The 6 oz jars from Ball, and the shorter jars from Kerr, fit nicely into the beer can jackets given away in beer promotions.
Wife did 160 containers of various jams,chutneys and cranberry/raisin sauce for her Christmas gift baskets.

Tube socks (athletic socks) also work great on wine bottles to keep them from clinking, crashing and breaking. Also handy to transfer a bottle or two to a friend's boat who invited you over for dinner.

I made a lot of jam to take as gifts, and thank you's for our Mexico cruise. So far they have been well received, and we enjoy it as well.

I have also had good luck with glass onboard. Everything from wine bottles to mason jars seem to do much better then it might seem they would.

We break more glassware at home than we do on the boat. We also take the route of using socks (usually new) to cushion bottles and wine glasses. Over the last year or so we've broken two wineglasses at home but the six on the boat which hang by their stems in an overhead rack are doing just fine.

Socks are good. Pipe insulation made of polyethylene foam (lagging) is even better glass protector. Available in variety of diameters e.g. 3'' suits well for typical wine bottle.

You can get French presses in thermal or plastic. I threw too many grounds around before I gave up the melita.

When the glass does break some dryer lint is a good way to get up all the little slivers... save you 20 minutes on your knees searching for the nasty little bits!

up untill a few years ago i didn't own any socks,let alone shoes,apart from flip flops!!
but do like the idea of transporting rum/wine in hiking socks between boats.

personally wont have any glass on the yacht,apart from in the galley,crew allways leave plastic cups lying around,hate to think of the consequenses on a metal boat with lots of people running around if we had proper glasses.

any good tuna bottleing recipies,we have 12 kilner jars that we can do 4 at a time in the pressure cooker?

normally just chop the fish in three and throw it in the bottom of the freezer,which slowly fills up with fish as we use up the red meat on passage.

any ideas for recycling ocean chicken greatly appreciated.

I try to avoid glass anything and usually am usually sucessful ,but socks work well if a must have is available only in glass.When I shop for the boat the first factor I consider is the packaging: Avoid glass, Smaller containers are prefered (no refrigeration) so less waste if some spoils ,shape of container (low,squat and square store best) and ability to reseal ( Boxes ) after opening. Shopping this way will add a little to the grocery bill and I might get a few lower quality brands that I would'n't buy at home but convience and storage ability trump these other considerations.
Shopping in other countries and in different ethnic areas of your own will will allow you to discover many items that you never even thought were available in any form ,but can be found dried, pickled,powdered jerked ,smoked or salted.This is the time to experiment and not only find what works for you,but also to meet the locals who will be thrilled to tell you of their favorite preparations. After all you are going for the adventure and food can be a big part of it especilly on a long passage.
