How do you make a fruit hammock and where do you buy the net?

The last time I bought some netting for stuff like that I was in the PNW and went to a fishermans chandlery and asked for smelt netting, the sold it in cotton, mono, and nylon. I used the cotton it was cheaper and has lasted for about 15 yrs so far !! I don't where ya are ! but down here in Louisiana net makers are every where ! and they have all kind of small netting !

The netting is available in many chandleries (sold by the metres in various widths).

This is the very simple method I used:
- Cut the netting carefully about half a cm from the knots so they have no tendency to unravel.
- Sew the sides together (tacking knots together) to form a bag
- Thread some elastic around the top of the bag (this deteriorates with UV exposure and needs to be replaced about yearly I find)
- Attach the top of the bag between two hooks

I have seen hammocks made more conventionally by gathering the ends together, but the bag method allows storage of more fruit with no tendency to spill out in rough conditions

Best approach seem to rig net athartships rather than the fore and aft configuration unless you are making applesauce. Make net easily removal for really heavy conditions and to wash out the fruit fly eggs that will inevitably arrive and hatch new swarms daily.

Alternatively, buy a "fish-net bag". It comes with sewn in snap-on/off plastic handles, ready to hang. Mauritz

gear nets (aka fruit hammocks) are found ready made in many chandleries for around 6 dollars us.

they suck at fruit storage--fruit gets weird net marks in it--i use bags in which onions are bought. they work fine. no fruit mayhem and no fruit reshaping....

The problem I have is finding a spot cool enough. The only space available is always close to the overhead which is always warm, even up here in the PNW. So I've just been bunching it together in a ice box.

Mesh Hammocks are available premade. Probably West Marine or maybe even Wal-mart. White and come in a small plastic package.
Another great way to store fruit is the metal 3 tiered baskets. They are sold/store flat, often a copper color. $10-$12 Just hang it up. handier than a hammock style. You may need a stabilizing small cord!

We used these for awhile, but found they are just as bad as a hammock for leaving a waffle print in your fruit. There is also a temptation to overload them, and they don't respond as well to that as the hammock.
