Fruit and Veg Net Bags

Can someone tell me where I can buy the net bags that is recommended you hang fruit and veg in on a long passage? (preferably in the UK..?!)

THey are not a great idea in my experience, they swing about often resulting in bashed fruit etc.

Don't know where you get them but how about buying fruit in nets and saving the nets if they are strong enough. Aldi in the Uk used to sell alot of stuff in nets, if I remember well even potatoes so those should be strong .

There are all sorts of snorkelling bags which would be ideal, since they can be attached at each end, resulting in less bashing.

I use mackerel netting from a chandlers strung up with shock cord. Works a treat, fruit and veg swing around a little but don't get bruised like they do in a basket.

Divers goodie nets are your best bet. The nets that some veggies now come in have a coating that will flake off and make a mess and they seem to degrade fast.

On rougher passages, you should secure them or you may have a fruit salad in the galley

i use the tiered metal baskets that used to be popular in the 70s.... findable in thrift stores in usa.... secured well-- holds fruits and veggies well and doesnt kill em..i hang potatoes from the grab rail in the sack in which they are purchased, same thing with onions.

a serious cruiser i know reckons they do a useful thing in ikea, its designed for storing shoes i think

Net bags work best athwartships ,hung fore and aft all gets smashed,but the fruit flies don't seem to mind.

I haven't had good luck with net bags, even hung athwartships. Storing apples results in apple sauce dripping below, and oranges make orange juice.

I only use nets now for clothes and other personal items that can take the abuse. Even if the nets don't hit anything, the motion is tough on the contents.

G'Day all,

We used nets on Insatiable I for many years, hung fore and aft, and at first experienced the smashing of contents noted above. Later we made up some tethers made of small diameter shock cord that limited the swing of the hammocks, and this cured the problem forever. They worked well for many fruits and veggies, didn't seem to damage them in any way, and expanded our limited storage space (old race boat).

Worked for us, YMMV.

I've used gear hammocks like Savior suggests. They work well. Fishing tackle stores sell some very nice draw string mesh bags very cheaply. Ask for a "chum bag".

here is netting in the U.K.,you can make the bags or hanging lockers whatever size you want.you can use plastic zip-ties to fabricate them.
