Re: Fridge Free Cookbook?

Hi Charlie
I know of no specific cookbooks, but as no one has responded for several days, check out the vegan thread:
http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...es-113368.html

Janet Groene has produced cookbooks for boats and RVs and I guess many of her recipes are based on ingredients with a long shelf life.

Neither of us on board are vegan or even vegetarian. The above thread was started, as with the exception of prolonging the life of certain vegetables, plant based food does not need refrigeration and I was in need of inspiration.

Our fridge is primarily used for drinks and it is commonly a week (and often two or three) between grocery visits for me and I was often stuck for recipes. Some of the recipes in the thread include vegetables with a short shelf life, but there are dozens of recipes that only require ingredients that easily keep weeks or months.

Photos are attached to most of the recipes. There is an index in the first post. As an added bonus recipes are suitable for small boat galleys with minimal utensils required (the only electrical appliance I use is a stick mixer occasionally) and generally the recipes use little gas and result in little steam filling the cabin.

Re: Fridge Free Cookbook?

I have not read it in a while, but I imagine this book is 100% fridge free.

Re: Fridge Free Cookbook?

Many camping oriented cookbooks out there, probably the best bet. I had a great one for years until I loaned it out and never got it back.
The campfire gourmet or trailside gourmet, something like that.
Learned this one the last morning of a pretty extreme hike, DO NOT try flavouring oatmeal with garlic and chili powder! Amazing trip though, rainforests are increadible.

Re: Fridge Free Cookbook?

Can I blow my own horn here? Thanks, y'all. I have a new book coming out from McGraw-Hill/International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press. Title is Survival Food Handbook. It's a guide to provisioning with shelf-stable supermarket foods. All recipes in the book are made with pantry ingredients. It's for "preppers" who provision for fun, not doomsday, using ordinary supermarket foods and not high-priced bomb shelter stuff. Preparedness can be rewarding, nutritious and tasty. Cover price will be $20 but I see that Amazon is offering the book at a generous pre-pub discount. http://amzn.to/1Izp2cV

I use dutch oven recipes. Lot of them are based on foods that preserve/store well. Can find several books on amazon and the like.

Also consider dehydrating your own foods if you have the time and inclination - books directed at hikers and other lightweight travellers will point that direction. I have no experience in their preparation - only consumption - but can confirm that my sister makes an incredible variety of home-dried foods for backpacking trips.

Re: Fridge Free Cookbook?

I'm sure Janet's book will be a welcome addition. I've used the Hungry Hiker's Book of Good Cooking for years. Tons of great receipts using fresh and dried ingredients. I've been drying food for decades, mostly for canoe/kayak trips, but have now started to do the same for our new sailing life. I've made a solar dehydrator which I hope to put to good use in the coming years.

Of course, there is lots of food that requires no refrigeration. In fact, many things we routinely cool do not require it. The key often seems to be buying food that has never been refrigerated, so shopping at farmer's markets instead of supermarkets.

Re: Fridge Free Cookbook?

There's a book called, "The Care And Feeding of the Offshore Sailor". Quite likely out of print. Maybe find in used book store.
