Neat invention Tudor. A lot of members have recommended the Aeropress system, but I have never seen one until your video.
Checked on YOUTUBE and found that it is only 4.5" diameter by 9" high.
Now I understand the need for a gimbal but I think for a boat, I will stick with a French Press with its wider base

Re: French Press coffee pot recommendation

While on YouTube also learned about scooping out the foam after you break the crust on the grind....never tried that.

This buying guide video shows the different types of presses

Re: French Press coffee pot recommendation

Never actually posted on this forum before but an avid subscriber. But on this topic, I can assure you of one thing, if you really want a real coffee shot on a yacht without power to contribute to a "real" capuccino" or "flat white". The "Nanopresso"(early model was Micropresso) is amazing. It generates hydraulic pressure manually to create a barista style coffee shot.

I have amazed all my guests on my yacht Carinya with a perfect Flat White in the mornings.

You also need a S/S milk jug with a Thermometer, and an "Aerolatte" milk frother.

Process:
Put the kettle on, just enough water for your coffee.
Put your milk in the jug(as much as you need) with the thermometer on a small burner.
Load your Coffee ground into the Nanopresso.
Water boiled. Pour into the coffee cup. Then load the water into the Nanopresso from your cup(water needs to be below boiling point)
Empty cup. the pump Nanopresso into your cup.
When Milk reaches 60-65 deg C. (no more) Buzz it for around 20 seconds with your Aerolatte Frother.
Pour into your cup with your shot.

If you are used to Plunger coffee, then the Aeropress will do you.. I tried it but it will not be a short black or a cappuccino.

Whoever *didn't* recommend the Aeropress, please do yourself a favor and check it out.

The Aeropress system is cheap, it's extremely tough plastic, it uses chemistry grade filters, and it's incredibly consistent if you've got a digital thermometer and the right grinding profile. Yachts are its perfect use case.

Lots of blogs and videos showing how to use it for however you like coffee done...

Is there a more robust make out there for the small single mug size?
My one cup a day of French Roast in the morning, is an addiction!

I buy the cheap glass ones at IKEA and keep multiples on board. When one breaks, I keep anything useful (screen), and throw it away. I find that having 2 on board is nice when you have a large group with different tastes.

Also -- I have one of the Stainless Steel ones at home, and they are very good!

Re: French Press coffee pot recommendation

Stove top espresso maker (not as thick or strong as a pro espresso machine, but even better than a French press most will make almost 2 cups if you don't like it so strong just dilute with hot water which is what I do.

Super compact and all stainless construction

I have several of the clever drippers.

I use the large one mainly...30 grams of coffee. Off boil water.. stir... wait 3 minutes.stir again then pour into 2 mugs.

For me, it is the cleanest taste, no mess like French press.

Hi Weavis, I was hoping you would chime in. [emoji106]

I have been studying coffee making videos this past week, learning from the professional buyers on how to judge the various standards of coffee beans prior to buying and to understand roast age and how it influences the gassing off effects.

I noted that the professional tasters used the clever dripper but thought that the #4 paper filters were a bad idea on a boat because of Garbage buildup

Are they biodegradable?

I did learn this week with the French press to scoop out all that brown foam before pressing and that has made a tremendous difference in taste and consistency....
Still lots to learn but this is fun!

The unbleached brown are biodegradable.

Re: French Press coffee pot recommendation

There is only one coffee machine that is better, and that is the vacuum glass method...

For clean tasting coffee with the attributes of French press.. then Clever dripper is the one...

Re: French Press coffee pot recommendation

Are you really enamored of a French Press? The water consumption for clean-up is pretty significant on a boat. I use a stainless steel percolator and Melitta perc filters. Good coffee, easy clean up.

I use a Melitta 4-cup filter holder on top of a big mug or on top of a measuring cup for two. Makes better coffee anyway without suds.
( I am biased since I was the one, who introduced paper filters to America way back)

Re: French Press coffee pot recommendation

If you really like coffee, I strongly recommend the handpresso (www.handpresso.com). There is nothing like a real espresso while sailing in the middle of nowhere (and also while anchored)
