Aim a bit lower than where you want to hit it. When you start you always end up hitting a dorsal fin. There are a lot of fish swimming around that I took a chunk off just under the dorsal fin. Aim low!!

The way that thing is laughing at Mark, I would just wait until it bends over holding its gut and peeing its pants and then just jump in and grab it. Looks in the picture like it is almost at that point...

We were frekkin becalmed, Bash! look at the ripples. NONE! Not only that we were becalmed for 1 week with these laughing hyenas there every day (well for 3 or 4 days) just circling the boat

We were becalmed so long I learned the ancient mariner by heart.

We were becalmed so long Albatross had time to fly up from the south pole.

We were becalmed so long we had kids, educated them and used them for bait!

Whats the longest people have been becalmed before hitting the Yanmar?
I just checked the chart in 4 days we did 128 miles. Thats 32 miles per day thats an average of 1.3 knots. I finally started the donk... lucky cos we could still be there

As far as those schooly mahi around the boat, really light line and a real small spoon is hard for them to resist .Especially if you can aim a small spray of water behind the boat .Drop your spoon right in the spray. It mimics the sound of
baitfish / fish feeding and triggers a feeding response. [top secret ,don't tell anyone]

As far as trolling for pelagics [ tuna, mahi, wahoo ect] try to drag a lure that has a good contrast with the sky .Darker colors on clear day ,neon and bright on cloudy days.

When flying fish are in the area ,a trolling Bird lure with a spoon tied 4 to 6 ft behind it works great and is fun to watch too.
As already mentioned, Cedar plugs ,jet heads, all work great. A little wire leader your choice of hook and a 3 "-5" plastic straw will make a lure too .

As far as speeds , 3kts to 16kts will catch the pelagics .
I ran a fishing charter and learned what would work. We used to bring the big fish off the bottom and behind the boat with the spray from the washdown hose.
You could sight cast to the one you wanted from there.
It was a lot of fun.
Calling fishy fishy fishy is also a MUST.

Those are interesting literary allusions because the biggest thing I've ever caught on a cedar plug was an albatross. And before I began to reel it in I was reminded of The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere, and that image of him wearing the dead albatross around his neck.

We were fortunate that ours didn't die. A commercial salmon boat, nearby, called on the radio and told us to throw a towel over the bird when we brought it aboard so that we could calm it before extracting the hook.

Once the bird was released I cast the cedar plug back in and dragged it all the way to LA before reeling it in and discovering that it must have become fouled with crude oil/tar somewhere off Santa Barbara.

I still maintain the position that if you're catching fish, you're sailing too slowly.

Poor 'lil bird! Did it struggle much?

I do get worried that a sea bird will have a go at a lure and become stuck. They are however, just a tad smarter than fish as we have caught none at all!

I need a shotgun

Mark,
I do not want to get into a rant about firearms ...

yet... I think a shotgun is not what you want... but a rifle, machine gun...

and I understand that the technique of dynamite fishing would wipe that smile off that fish.....

The aforementioned Dupont spinner ... which of course requires a certain technique. For instance: do not deploy while significant other is cleaning the hull. Unless sufficient life insurance and a plausible storey is in place. Use of dynamite may make bottom cleaning unneccessary though that is beyond the scope of this missive.

I never realized all the benefits (pun intended) of the Dupont spinner method.

Avoids need for bottom cleaning (probably due to the boat being on the bottom...)

Benefit from crew turning into fish food. (not significant other, just the ones that are a PITA). (and side benefit if you are life insurance beneficiary )

And the feeling of having the last laugh at the damn fish.....

If you don't want a sea bird to get hooked, towed a Mann's stretch or Yo-Zuri that are designed to dive to 20 ft.
