Re: Finally a Decent Nespresso Substitute

If there are a few of you on board drinking a few cups a day the "cheaper" machine gets pretty expensive pretty quickly.

I'd be looking at $2-3 per day in pod costs. I just couldn't stomach paying $1,000 per year for those things. I've had my fancy machine for several years already so the savings are pretty substantial.

It's also fun to try the local fare. Brought some coffee back from Papua New Guinea last year which was fun.

Although it's just recently moved on the boat. If the salt air ruins it I may be driven to tea!

Dockhead, I'm with you on the Nespresso brand. This looks like a slightly less expensive version. I wonder how accessible it is in stores. I see their web site talks about their club, and you can order on-line just like Nespresso.

Re: Finally a Decent Nespresso Substitute

Another vote for Aeropress. The coffee is a little better than a French press and there's no grit. Also, made of acrylic so it doesn't break and there's no cleanup. Just eject the "puck" into the trash or overboard. On the downside, I have found that the rubber plunger end shrinks after a year or so and needs replacement, but at $9 no big deal.

I just can't get my head around all that aluminum and plastic waste that comes along with Nespresso. Friends have the machine and I like it a lot, but oh that waste.

Yup, it's truly appalling, isn''t it? Kinda like their relationship with Budweiser and what they think is beer!

Anyway, Dockhead, couldn't you just sell one of your homes to afford the Nepresso refills?

You know what is said about American beer and making love in a canoe don't you?

Most amazing thing is American beer had it roots with honest to God German brewers, where did it go wrong?

Starbucks used to have an instant offering. Don't know if they still do. I was given some to check it out, and liked it very much.

GBN: No it really only works for American, maybe Mexican and Caribbean too.

Waggy: They are still available, and quite good as instant goes, but not in the same hemisphere as a Nespresso.

Re: Finally a Decent Nespresso Substitute

One of our Canadian business commentators, Amanda Lang, used to have a segment on her show called "Rich Peoples Problems". I'd think this qualifies.

But lets face it, a good coffee is pretty darn important, and I want good without all the hassle a traditional barista goes thru.

Worth reading for all those in love with Nespresso. I was also a user but actually found in reality the coffee is way inferior to decent French press brew and the waste produced is shocking. Just another fad that future generations will look back on saying "what were they thinking"

It would be the perfect boat coffee machine, except for one thing -- Nespresso is a business case studied on all business schools around the world about how to create a premium brand demanding premium prices with a combination of (a) strong patent protection to prevent direct competition; (b) an enormously expensive marketing campaign (which has added millions to George Clooney's net worth); (c) tightly restricted distribution chains; (d) creating a "club" mystique.

As a result, the damned capsules are ridiculously overpriced, representing about 1 cent worth of (excellent) coffee, 5 cents worth of (really excellent) packaging, and 44 cents worth of (unneeded) hype. And furthermore, if you run out of them, you're stuffed unless you're near a "Nespresso Boutique" (gag!), or can receive a mail order package.
Life's pretty good, isn't it, when we complain about stuff like this.

Re: Finally a Decent Nespresso Substitute

A friend introduced me to the Aeropress. The coffee it makes is excellent. And it is very easy to make, easy to rinse and the little filter discs are very inexpensive.
If you can boil water, you're in! It's worth a look by anyone on a boat.
