Favorite Salty Bars Maine to Florida?

First let me say that I'm asking this totally out of personal alcoholic curiosity, not because I am pitching for a guidebook. I'm wondering about honest-to-goodness waterside bars that have withstood the whips and scorns of time and the Internet age. Perhaps there's nowhere like this left but I'm thinking about a place where people are as likely to be drinking at 6 am as 6 pm, where the bartender knows the local waters, where a deckhand could find work or a place to sleep etc. Places warm, hospitable, maybe quircky, but places that feel like they will be the same a 100 years from now. Any recommendations?

I know none of such but I would think they would still exist in many backwater areas off the beaten tourist tracks, such as Eastern shore MD where many points have active working fisherman and small communities.

Well starting at the bottom would be a bar or 2 in Key West. No I don't know what they were called. Who remembers the name of a bar? I think you could wash ashore in Key West, find a bar get drunk and somehow get by.

The only two bars in Key West that carry over from the old days are the Schooner Wharf and the Green Parrot. Imo.

Well... the Back Street Pub in Beaufort NC... just off Taylors Creek helped me through a hard couple of winter months... roaring log fire.. good bunch of regulars and staff.. spent many convivial hours there.. never felt a thing rowing home in the wee hours..

Davis' Pub in Eastport, next to Annapolis, fits the bill. Last time I was there during the boat show I had to wait for Wally Moran to change out of his wetsuit behind the door of his pickup truck. We got a table outside, and noticed Lin and Larry Pardey waiting in line so invited them to join us, then we noticed Liza Copeland looking lost so invited her over too.

Re: Favorite Salty Bars Maine to Florida?

Finally! Someone is addressing our expertise! The following are not always among the "saltiest", but they are places where we have been welcomed with a fond sense of community when we crusie into the harbor. Some of our favorites are missing from this list because we never took note of the name.
Boothbay, Maine......Kaler's
Gloucester, Ma........Crow's Nest
Onset, Ma..............Anthony's
Baltimore................Cat's Eye Pub (Fell's Pt)
Elizabeth City,NC.....Thumper's
Oriental, NC............M&M's
Georgetown, SC......The Big Tuna
Fernandina, Fl.........The Palace Saloon
St. Augustine..........The Conch House
....oh, and I see the Tradewinds too in St. Augustine as posted above! 'haven't been back since the arms were cut off the wood statue behind the bar. 'actually it arrived that way when originally shipped,- honest!

Re: Favorite Salty Bars Maine to Florida?

Oh, and there's another one. I can't remember the name, but it's up the first canal on the opposite side of the mooring field at Fort Myers Beach. 'across from Salty Sam's. This is the ultimate and most spectacular bar for cruisers. It's the only bar I know of that doubles as a coin laundry! You take in your clothes by dinghy and order a round for the wash cycles and another for drying. .....or maybe drying is the third if you count the rinse cycle!

Its not in Maine, but my two favorites are the Shipwreck in St Thomas, and the Dogwatch in Antigua.

That comes under Maine to Florida... 'The Scenic Route'..
So I'll chuck in the 'Soggy Dollar' at Pallapa Docks SMX... and the old Shrimpy's on Dutch side whose new owners are doing a great job hosting us travellers.. (y)

Here are mine from Maine:

Jay's Oyster Bar in Portland.
The Waterfront in Camden.

We also loved the little candlelit bar in At. Augustine, FL in the historic section.
