A sailboat runs on beer just as much as it runs on diesel and fresh water, especially in hot weather. Beer is the single best argument in favor of refrigeration on board.

But I never buy preserved, pasteurized, plastic beer like Heineken or Corona if I have any alternative at all. I ALWAYS buy whatever is local and fresh. Hairoun (two thumbs up; fantastic beer), maybe Red Stripe in the Caribbean, or any one of the dozens of local brands (hate the tiny little bottles, though). Karlovacka or Ozujsko in Croatia. Beer is not as good in Turkey -- the Efes and Tekel Birasi brands are typical big-brewery plastic products. Cerveza Mexicali or Tijuana Beer in Mexico are delicious.

Beer is as local as milk or bread, and should be consumed fresh and as close as possible to the brewery, in my opinion. Would you buy milk or bread mass produced and imported from Holland? I didn't think so. You'd want bread fresh made in the local bakery, and milk from the local dairy. Why should beer be any different?

The Heineken that is sold in the Caribbean is brewed in the Caribbean. So it is made by locals and is the most popular beer in the Caribbean in sales, so the locals are loving it. It is not my favorite but it is "local" to the caribbean, if that floats your beer boat.

My favorite is whatever local beer I can find. Kind of like the song lyrics, "love the one you're with"...

Hairoun in St. Vincent & The Grenadines
Wadadli in Antigua & Barbuda
Kubuli in Dominica
Biere Corsaire in Guadeloupe
Heineken in St. Maarten
Carib in St. Kitts & Nevis, Grenada, and other islands
Skol in St. Kitts & Nevis

But I have to say, Presidente (Dominican Republic) is my favorite of favorites! Clean, crisp, and perfect for cooling down in the cockpit after a hard day's sail.

Cheers!

Preferred beer is a cold Victoria Bitter by the stubby. Can't drink out of a can, it just doesn't taste the same. If no VB, then whatever is available.

There is no such thing as a bad beer. It's just that some beers are better than others.

I enjoy drinking the local beers....but often they are not great. Except in northern Europe where I tried hard to sample all 500 local Belgium beers.

So Arthur Guiness, Anheiser Bush, and Adolf Coors are all visiting Octoberfest...they decide to go into a pub...Bush says, "I would like a Bud, please." Coors says, "I would like a Coors, please." and Arthur Guiness says, "I would like a Coke, Please." Coors and Bush turn in amazements and stare at Arthur Guiness. Arthur Guiness turns and says, "Well if you all aren't going to drink....neither am I."
