You don't eat wild meat, do you? All the meat modern people eat is farmed. We are not knocking over giraffes for food, we eat cows bread for it.

That includes locals who think they can pillage their Caribbean islands of Conch... The only thing that can battle against algy that's destroyed the Caribbean coral. Same goes for Australians who continue to torture and eat dugong and turtles.

Leave the Mahi Mahi to their mates.

Personally, I refuse to eat farm raised fish. There are too many negative impacts on the environment from fish farming. Also, there are negatives in the quality of the meat and chemicals present. But I also try to eat organic food from trusted sources whenever possible. I personally feel there is a lot of problems with commercial farming for anything as it generally creates environmental problems while providing an inferior product.

Mahi is my favorite fish for a number of reasons. One of which is that it is always fresh caught. No one farm raises Mahi. Also, farm raised fish isn't generally available in areas like the Caribbean while you can easily catch your own fish. Here in the Northeast my favorite fish is Striped Bass. Again, not generally farm raised.

When I fish, I try to take all reasonable measures to be able to release fish that are under sized or not desirable by us for eating. I file down the barbs on my hooks, use circle hooks and I don't use a gaff to land the fish. I plan to spear fish with a Hawaiian sling when I get to warm waters and that lets you be highly selective with what you spear.

I also don't feel that fishing, or hunting for that matter (but I don't personally hunt), are "macho crap in denuding the worlds resources" so long as you only keep (or shoot) what you eat and are responsible to sustainability of the fish in how much you keep. It's how humans, all carnivores for that matter including Mahi, have obtained food for the history of the earth. You don't catch fish by putting lettuce on the hook. Plus it's also far more sustainable than commercial farming.

And your Pearly Gates line is just kind of dumb. Would the fish St. Peter care more that you eat his relative as part of the natural course of life or that you kept his relative in slavery for its life and then ate it? If you were really worried about some sort of Pearly Gates karma, you would eat vegan.

I think fisherman taking a fish and eating it has very little to do with any degrading of fisheries. The culpit is commercial fishing processes that take more than they need and waste what they don't see as commercially viable.

A report by FAO (United Nations) estimates 27 million metric tons of fish are discarded in commercial fisheries every year. That is what needs to be stopped.

And by the way Teknav much of that wild game does go to the food bank because there is just about nowhere else to put it. My friends are super hunters. They give me wild game all the time. In the past year I've eaten deer, elk, antelope, bear, moose, geese, duck, pheasant etc. I do it because it's free and supposed to be better tasting. Ya can't beat good ole cow though.

Mahi do not have mates - they spawn in schools. The "mate for life" thing with them is a wives tale (along with all of the female's offspring will die if she does). How do you know there aren't any others around?

We never did get a good explanation of whom the other Mahi is. Just one curious onlooker does not make sense. So why is one fish hanging out so closely with another fish?

Mahi Mahi swim in schools, as do many fish ! and they rise because of the action in the water ! never a better time to catch another, then when ya have one on your line !! We have fed ourselfs with the fish we have caught many times !! Always have a line and lure in the water at all times ! even when it's rough !! We eat or freeze all the fish we catch !! Personaly I can't imagine folks wanting to eat farmed fish, after all the bad news thats been showing up on the fish farms polluteing and the fish being bad for ya !! Im sure that the many fish we have caught have not put a dent in the fish population of the world !! So we are sure gonna keep in trying to catch all we can !!!! Just our 2 cents

There is no logical line connecting catching wild mahi with hunting giraffes, dugong or any of your other examples. Make that connection with whales or bluefin tuna or toothfish at will, but not with a fish like a mahi.

Guess MarkJ may be a poor fisherman and he doesn't doesn't eat fish unless they are farmed.

As our ocean fisheries are progressively closed around Australia the majority are eating more farmed seafood imported from Asia. Relatively poor quality compared to locally caught.

Mark, one of the reasons I intend to cruise is to gather my own fresh seafood or barter as I go as you do. Being able to catch your own is one of the attractions of voyaging. Bugger buying everything from the supermarket or in a can.
